Using Xfinity Internet in North Eastern U.S. with 1tb worth of download data. This streaming service Shadow Tech uses alot of data. Make sure you have a unlimited plan if you game all day.

Second: my Shadow Tech Streaming cloud computer came with a PNY Quadro P5000 NOT a GTX 1080. And this card is not the best for gaming but it still does a decent enough job i guess. GTA V sometimes chops. But the games look real crisp I recommend to try it out.

no not really. there was onlive and others. nothing new here. but google perfected it.
google created new special hardware with amd for this job. also google using linux and virtualization.
this allows them to easily assign hardware whoever needs. that lowers costs a lot.
difference between shadow and stadia is like electric bicycle and modern car

Actually the service they provide is capable of performing everything in every way at the same latency as your desktop PC of the same spec. It is truly the way of the future. It functions so awesomely it's almost worth the price they charge. However it cost twice as much as it should in my opinion for continue to use. If you were only going to use it for a month or limit amount of time. Then their current price would be fine. But for people who realize it's benefits now. And wish to use it regularly. It cost way too much. Also and this is a pretty big problem. Probably should have led with this one but thought I would save it to the end. They're fucking liars. They say they support and work on Android. But this is false and completely inaccurate in reality. They do not officially support Android. They told me themselves. When I complained of the functionality on Android. You can get it to work on Android. You cannot get it to function properly at all on Android. I believe it's to force you to buy their little box. So the problem is not the service or the network. It's the COST and Accessibility for ALL Android devices. That is their big problem. Otherwise as far as I can tell. Google Stadia can't even come close to shadow In functionality or latency. Can't even touch it. Hope this information is helpful to anyone who reads it.

You still gotta deal with excessive data usage when it comes to cloud based gaming. I'm not sure how it is in Canada but in the US most residential ISP plans cap you at a terabyte of data a months and exceeding this cap will either result in throttling or overage fees and when your talking about something that uses up to 20 Mbps is pretty easy to burn through that terabyte allowance rather quickly. Financing a $3000 gaming PC will still cost you less than monthly the internet requirement to run cloud based gaming and will likely result in better performance.

they'll probably lower the prices. Also, you have to realize that what google is proposing is a cloud gaming experience where you can play any games for free as long as its in the library. It's different from shadow, who doesn't give you any games, only a remote desktop. That means it's probably cheaper and you have ownership over the games you play, since you bought them.

Also their latency is probably better because they've been working on it since 2015, whereas google will soon realize their cloud to client latency is massive. That's why google is emphasizing their compute power throught their thousands of servers, and shadow, who has like 10 servers in total, is prioritizing latency over the total amount of concurrent users. Stadia will likely be able to handle tens of millions of concurrent users, whereas shadow struggles with 100k users at the same time, but their latency is better. So stadia and shadow aren't targeted at the same audience.

This will never be viable where I live in Tasmania. There's no way they'd build a data centre here, and the extra latency to the mainland would not be worth putting up with. Not to mention how often the internet goes down or under-performs.
Which is kind of a shame, because it WOULD be nice to be able to game anywhere, on anything. Maybe if they ever invent ansible-based network interfaces.

just as a prerequisite, i have only built one computer in my life about a year ago. so I'm no expert in the field, but i felt i should give my opinions on this thing.

i don't feel like this service will every even come close to replacing traditional PC's. and i also feel that in about a year this company will shut down, here's why

first, there will always be people who want to build and customize there PC's, there is no way of getting around that. people who want traditional PC's, will get traditional PC's.

Second, the subscription fee is a total rip, lets say a good rig would probably cost around $700-$1000 on the low end for these specs. and would probably last around 5-6 years without further upgrading.and with such high subscription fees i feel the company won't really have much of a customer base. and in concept the idea is good.
and let me do some math real quick. $35 dollars a month for lets say 6 years which is around $420 a year for five years comes out to a grand total of... $2,520!! its really not worth it in the long run. sure the initial investment of a traditional PC would be a lot, but it would be a one time fee of $700-$1000, NOT OVER 2 AND A HALF GRAND.

lastly, while i understand that some people can't afford that all at once or its just to scary for some to build their own PC's, but spending almost 3 times what you would for Netflix a month just doesn't seem worth it to me to be frank. especially from my understanding, YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR GAMES!

i do understand that Linus runs a business and needs money and whatever. but i just feel that he of all people would at least point out more potential issues other that "speed could be an issue".

    • Hayden Pack
      Hayden Pack Před 7 dny

I would also like to note most enthusiasts replace or upgrade their rigs every 3rd hardware generation, which these days is about every 3 years, not 5

    • Hayden Pack
      Hayden Pack Před 7 dny

The problen with your logic is the assumption that the system is emulating a $700 rig when it is in fact claiming to emulate a $1,400 rig. Yes, $1,400 is still less than $2,400, but look at other industries: purchasing a new car costs anywhere from $22k to $50k on average, which is a hefty chunk of change, which is why we have such options as financing, rental, and rideshare apps like lyft or uber. Figuring based on averages for my city (dallas), financing a $22k car for 48 months costs over $30k after interest and fees. Renting a car costs an average of $65 per day, which totals over $23k in only one year, and around $94k in the same 48 months. Using 4 lyft (the cheapest rideshare option here) rides per day at 10 to 15 miles per ride averages $44 per day, which is over $64k in 48 months. Spending more than a service is worth for the convenience of paying over time rather than upfront is nothing new, and that is possibly the best reason this company may find great success.

Also the aspect of having all your data stored in a place that isn't your own home is shady enough, you would have to strictly use this for gaming for maximum safety, which in turn means you will have to buy a PC/Laptop for personal use anyway.

In the age of internet spying who would want to give control of something that you paid for over to someone else would can now decide that they are going to put conditions on it's gamers in order for them to access their own games that is why the idea of downloadable games instead of a physical disc needs to be talked about when they want to start doing things like this and we should have the right in a free national to have freedom of choice!

The idea of central servers have been used in the medical field for decades, this tech has begun to take over, with the cloud for pics/docs and epic for the medical world. Total cost of ownership exceeds the cost for a good gaming PC or Console. They would need to include the games for free in the monthly service to make this worth it. Also, the largest issue will be regional internet speeds. Even wired connections on fast networks can have 13-21ms latency on a wired connection within a city reaching out to their network. The users still need to go through their ISP infrastructure and your own internet speeds. Also, this will not handle VR HMDs. Many hardcore gamers also utilize VR and Multi screen gaming.

In the USSA this is never going to work. Big Corp with their 20 year old infrastructure and data caps (to protect said old infrastructure) make this impossible. Also, I'm old enough to remember this... it's was called a mainframe. It sucked - just like this idea, and LTT for promoting this crap without the 'real' downsides and lack of sustainability.

Two things will kill this. 1. They will have to upgrade to cover new tech... and that is a lot of graphics card equivalents to swap out.
    2. A lot of the pleasure in PC gaming is in the build.

Considering you need to be able to afford top of the shelf internet speeds AND need to re buy your games on top of the subscription, the only people who can afford this will just spend that money on their own pc parts or a good prefab instead. This service WILL die like literally all of the others for that fact alone. Also, gotta love how he mentions the latency test was under ideal circumstances. Remember, he has a TEN GIGABIT connection. No average consumer has that. Period.

+Sam also, minor thing (in that I'm sure Shadow found some way around it either via a loophole or special contracts from Microsoft) but even Linus himself pointed out (in his why Linus pirates windows video) that having a windows 10 installation made only for remote access is against Microsoft's EULA, so technically (according to Microsoft anyway) is software piracy.

+Sam well I didn't realize you could install steam on the service, not all services let you do that. That's actually kind of cool. Doesn't change the rest of the issues with this system.

Here is a question can a quad core (this is a xeon so lower clock speeds than a i5 or i7) with 12Gb ram @ 2400Mhz and 256GB of storage be considered high spec my brother has a 3770k a 4.8Ghz 16Gb of ram @ 2133 and 500GB of ssd storage now if he was to put a 1080 in there it would out perform shadow and could install more than 2 large games (plus with only 12Gb of ram your going to be hitting the page file alot which is the same grive your games are on causing lag each time that happens)
