The old macbook is better than the paper thin 2019 new macbooks. Thick. Durable, looking expensive, no issues, easy to fix and change ssd/battery etc. very thin laptop looks like it will break after 1 to 2 yrs. my macbook pro is living a good life from 2011. Still works like a dragon.

Apple should allow OWC to sell and support the expansion or this add-on creating a more modular 2016/2018 MBP. I'd like to see where they are with ARM. I've been a Mac user since 1984 and to expand my knowledge last year I build my 1st Windows Box never being a windows user it was easy and I learned a lot about hardware "$768 4 8core 32gb ddr4-3200 8gb GPU beast". I got Mac OS installer to boot up on my AMD CPU but couldn't get it to start up. So I've been using windows just to get by with Lightroom & Photoshop my macs were 10+years old and breaking down. I want to get a new mac but with ARM-based MBP on the Horizon, I want to wait for my potential $3500+ config It is a lot for me to spend. HEY APPLE I can't afford a keyboard meltdown and no upgradability...

They could probably fix a lot of the issues without making them too much thicker, it'd just cost too much money when they could just repair the few (too many) that break until the next body styling is rolled out. They are so close so these issues are such a bummer.

I really don't understand why people mad behind thin laptops so much especially when its giving u all these problems and that also expensive apple laptops. Trust me thicker chassis may compromise weight and movement but come on guys its not too heavy stuff man, they have much better thermal management and a lot of headroom is there to upgrade stuffs and are also very durable. Go for longevity, upgradability and durabilty. And by the way thicker laptops look way cooler than thin ones at least for me.

If they go to Arm processors then cooling won’t be a problem. Hopefully they can design a new motherboard with a smaller form factor and give more space for a better keyboard design. Allows them to keep that super thin look. They probably shouldn’t have gone so thin when they had to make so many compromises with the current configuration. My 13” 2014 MacBook Pro will be my last MacBook until they come up with a new design without all the compromises.

    Apple is a joke.
As a developer, I've see so many colleagues buy these pieces of trash simply because they are POSIX out of the box. I am so glad that Microsoft has decided to make the WSL a priority in the recent windows 10 updates. Having the new Windows Terminal and WSL2 has made it easier for me to get some of these colleagues to abandon Apple machines.

Apple definitely should make their Macbook Pro line a bit thicker. I'd even go so far as to say that the 2015 Retina could stand to be a little thicker. The benefits are way too numerous:

    1. The old keyboard was better, in every way. If the Macbook Pro were perfect in every other respect, but still had that keyboard, I still would never buy one because I cannot stand that keyboard.
    2. Ports. A thicker MBP would accommodate more of the "legacy" ports. Having two USB-C ports and a USB 3 port and HDMI port, for instance, would be more useful than having 4 USB-C ports. People still have lots of things that use some of these ports. Nobody needs 4 USB-C items plugged in at once (and if they did, they could just use a hub), but many people could use ports that don't require dongles.
    3. While I don't think they couldn't fit Magsafe into the thinner chassis, the decision to remove it is a terrible one IMO. While the adapters flimsy and leave something to be desired, the connector itself is brilliant and one of the best features of any Apple laptop. Additionally, the light on the Magsafe adapter is a great troubleshooting indicator. USB-C power connections are easy to break.
    4. Thicker battery. A thicker chassis means that the battery can be thicker, and therefore there take up a smaller footprint, leaving more space for those ports I mentioned earlier. Same goes for the iPhone, Apple claims they needed to remove the headphone jack for space reasons but had they made the phone slightly thicker, this wouldn't have been a problem.
    5. Cooling. The bane of every Macbook. Apple loves to design these things with zero cooling. With the pathetic excuses for heatsinks that they use in the name of making the stupid thing half a mm thinner, it's no wonder why these things throttle so much. What's the point in putting an i9 in the laptop when you can't use it fully? Thicker chassis means bigger heatsink, and better performance.
    6. Upgradeable storage and RAM. Yes, I know the RAM has been soldered for a while now. But we need to go back to replaceable RAM. Not only because it allows the user to upgrade in the future, but also because it means that I don't have to pull the logic board out and reflow RAM chips every time someone brings me a laptop with a RAM issue. Apple solders the stuff to the logic board solely to force their users to opt for the maximum upgrades they think they'll ever need at the time of purchase. By doing so, they can charge a premium for the component upgrades. Go look at the 2017 Air, which is still being sold, and compare their SSD upgrade options to either OWC or the price of an adapter and standard M.2 drive upgrade. You can buy an aftermarket drive for less than the cost of Apple's "upgrade" and the bonus is you get the base storage SSD on top of that. And this is on a device with a removable SSD. Think of what they charge for upgrades that are impossible without ordering from the factory. (Incidentally, if you buy the cheap non-Touchbar 13" MBP, it DOES still have removable storage, though in typical Apple fashion it uses yet another new, proprietary connector.)

It's clear that Apple has no intention of doing this, or changing anything of these things. In fact, I read a little while ago about a patent they applied for that would use a Touchscreen for a keyboard with tiny indents to indicate key presses. This makes me think of a keyboard that is somehow worse than the butterfly keyboard. Apple does not seem concerned about the needs of their customers but rather how flashy and expensive they can make their devices. IMO, while MacOS is a fine operating system and I can see why lots of people enjoy using it, the physical changes they are making to their devices are negatively impacting the day-to-day usability and from what I see, it is actually starting to turn off more of the casual Apple users who see things like the keyboard and lack of ports as significant downgrades to the older machines they already own, machines which even after 5 or more years still do a decent job of meeting their needs (gotta give Apple some credit for that).

This form-over-function stuff seems like a misguided attempt for Apple to continue design aesthetics that Steve Jobs pioneered. The thing is, Steve Jobs used design to not only create more elegant devices but to make them more usable. I personally think that Jobs would be rather irate about some of the design decisions Apple has recently made. Apple knows that their laptops are lasting a long time and they want to create more reasons for users to upgrade to new machines. This is why their screens are expensive and impossible to source in the second-hand market, this is why they're so adamantly opposing third-party repair. Apple is going out of their way to make their machines disposable so that they can create an artificial need to upgrade. The next time you hear anything about Apple's commitment to the environment or their recycling efforts, keep in mind the tons of usable machines and parts that end up being shredded at Apple's behest just to keep those things out of the hands of repairers like me, all so that their own customers face either an exorbitant repair cost through Apple themselves or simply replace the machine with a brand new one. E-waste is a huge problem but Apple cares more about getting you to spend more money on their devices than to keep older machines running.

Just to add my 2 cents: I have a 2018 15” Pro I bought in October; replaced my 2012 15” Pro. Right away I wasn’t happy with the keyboard, though more or less adjusted. I think they should have left this thicker for more durable keys, components, and chassis, and perhaps *finally* implementing a touch screen. At this point, I don’t know that they should go thicker than what it is, but as components get thinner/smaller still, they should not make the device any smaller than what it is now.

I sold my 13inch, i5 2015 Macbook maybe 3 months ago to purchase the 2018 15 inch i7 Macbook and do I regret it? Kinda, but not really. I am not having throttling issues, and I actually do not mind the keyboard. The 2015 MacBook was one of the best devices I have ever used, but I am in the film and tv production industry so I needed the bigger screen, and the faster processor and even though the graphics card is not the most top-notch, it also helps so much in FCP. So, if I didn't need the performance of the 2018 Macbook then I probably wouldn't have upgraded.
    - The 2015 keyboard was the best, but I love how the 2018 feels. My WPM in down, but that is ok. It is still decent.
    - Battery life is better on the 2018, maybe because of the age.
    - Touchbar is OK. If I could have saved money going without it I would, but there are third-party apps that actually make it useful.
    - Not having the 2015 inputs is sucky, but I carry around 1 adapter with me that does everything I need it to and has all the plugs I need so it is really not a big deal to me. It is tiny and fits everywhere I go.
    - Losing the MagSafe charger. Yeah, this one sucks. I hate that it went to a type-c, but I get why they did it. The MagSafe and it's quick to unlatch was the best, and now I felt like I was gonna trip and destroy my Mac. Keep in mind I am a college student so it is the students I worry about more than me who may knock my computer over.
HOWEVER, I purchased a magnetic type-c adapter (one gets plugged into the Mac and the other on the charger) and BAM, I have my magnet charger back. They go for around 20 bucks on Amazon.
Overall I do not regret it but there are some things I miss. In the end, good things die and good things come. We have to learn how to adapt. That is just the tech world we live in.
    Edited: grammar
