Nowadays, dedicated sound cards really are only necessary for musicians and professional audio mixers. As far as actually playing back high end audio content (including surround sound) on PC, the onboard software based audio drivers such as those from Realtek found on most motherboards are more than good enough. Even the HDMI output on modern graphics cards will work provided you plug it into an AV receiver that has HDMI inputs.

    Horrible product! ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!
As a canadian purchaser. They refused their manufacturer warranty because the product was purchased in canada from newegg.ca
Newegg eventually understood my situation and issued a refund.

Didn't consider CPU utilization or data throughput. I have found, at least with onboard sound that the CPU utilization is higher and there is more general load on the system making things a bit slower. With a dedicated sound card plugged into your PCI express slot I have noticed and actually measured better gaming performance. Can't speak too much for USB sound cards as I've almost never used one and in particular those of the home audio or gaming persuasion. I have used pro audio digital interfaces as USB sound cards, like the Roland Quad Capture and Akia EIE Pro but only in a home studio recording capacity. And for your info joystick plugs were a welcome edition back in the day like especially on my Packard Bell.

I have this and rather unexpectedly during games with uncompressed audio (Rainbow Six Siege) the PCB gets very, very hot in operation, at least 60c as the back side is too hot to touch across the whole board. I would recommend not installing this next to a GPU, the card seems to not care about the operating temperature, but considering the board can draw up to 75W from the slot, its quite a lot of heat to dump into your case when gaming.

I have had an exquisite Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card for almost 9 years now. The sound out of this puppy is great. I have it connected directly to my stereo with a digital coaxial cable. The sound from it (my media library is FLAC audio mostly) is superb and great. To me, if your audio or media source is from your PC, it's a good idea to have a discrete sound card.

  • ExecutorQ3
    ExecutorQ3 Před 2 měsíci +1

I dont want or plan to use external cards (even though i could just grab one in my office, the eternal one from RME i've got laying on the shelf is pretty good) and everytime i used on-board shit i heard a lot of noise (the last one i tried was on my gigabyte z270 and it has ambient noise and then extra noise everytime you do anything at the computer, even moving the mouse). The internal card both solves this for me (still using my old SB X-Fi, it's a bit chose to make it work on win 10 - every big win10 fcked up update messes up with the working driver and i have to downgrade it again - but it works).

  • kokot sity

Old school gamers and enthusiast will tell you that dac is external garbage worth console use. I would never settle for something so simple and useless as dac is. Maybe portable one since smartphones volumes are shiit on any headphones other than ultra high ohm earbuds. My 20 year old walkman sound twice louder than these shit phones nowadays, good theyre taking off the phone jack out, was useless to begin with anyway.
I always keep up with soundcards and saying onboard sound, even surround ones are decent and you dont need dedicated sound card is a lie. So is the USB loaded headsets such as logitech or razer that promise you this fake surround sound causing vomit and costs more than a surround sound blaster card with a lower end 5.1 speaker system combined.
But who would settle for a stereo dac? Once youre dashing the money out, dont be stupid and get a complex sound card that knows more than pull sound off of a usb. Analog is analog, kapish people?

Use 5.1 or 7.1 surround speaker system for your gaming (like I do)? Yes need a sound card since most boards only have 2.0 speakers out, mic in, and sometimes line in, with no option for 5.1 onboard except for some high end mobos.

Interested in the optical out and if it can give digital surround like my PS4 can. My reciever does not support 4k@60hz so I need a decent workaround. Best option would be to not go via HDMI, rather put that one straight into the TV and the optical soundcable to the receiver. That would enable full 4k WITH DTS. The regular optical out on my PC gives stereo, as does the optical out on the TV. SO A soundcard with this feat is my best option. (Unless the Vega 56 comes with such an outlet) ((yeah right))

Sound Blaster Z and X, since Z, has a front panel audio plug jack that can be use instead of having plugged into the mother board which I found neat. But, perhaps Linus was referring to the jacks on the front of the case and not the internal plug for the front panel jacks not being grounded. Either way, I thought it was neat though I prefer speaker unless I were in a place I had to use head phones.

I understand why they put joystick ports on their old soundcards. Those were used way back in the day to control midi interfaces. You would by a joystick to midi adapter and you could control external gear. Makes sense for audio engineering.
I understand why they put a firewire port on their old soundcards. Firewire was a port that was mostly used with high end audio engineering gear. Makes sense for audio engineering.
    I....dont understand the RGB.
How about an easy, quick 5.1 surround or even say 7.1, 12.2 or whatever, solution for home audio engineers. As it stands now, its not quite as accessible to home engineers as stereo is. I could take 6 outs on my Focusrite Saffire 40 and make a 5.1 bus, but that isnt easy/quick. I know its doable. Its just not as accessible.
Also, creative should look into ambisonics.
