Lisbon - what makes Portugal's capital city so attractive? | DW Documentary

  • Lisbon, Portugal’s "White City", is an old multifaceted city in Europe. Lisbon has experienced many periods of prosperity and has survived many crises.
But what makes Lisbon so attractive today - especially among young people? A film crew met a range of mainly young people in Lisbon, and asked them about their relationship to the Portuguese capital city. Lisbon’s history has been significantly shaped by its harbor, which made it a central hub of trade in Europe and the starting point for voyages of discovery and conquest in the late Middle Ages. Vasco da Gama embarked on his last trip to India from Lisbon, and enjoyed a hero’s welcome on his return in 1499. From Bairro Alto and the National Museum of Ancient Art to the Tower of Belém and countless palaces, churches and hotels, Lisbon has a lot to offer tourists. But what makes the Portuguese capital such an attractive destination for young people in the present day? The friendly and carefree nature of the Portuguese people, says one blogger, who quit his job in a bank in order to photograph his city for an image campaign. The incomparable light of Lisbon, says a city historian committed to the conservation of Portugal’s colorful glazed wall tiles: azulejos. The sense of melancholy, adds a singer, who is just as enthusiastic about modern electronic music as she is about the traditional fado, which she herself performs on stage. Culinary specialties made from locally fished seafood are the secret, says an acclaimed chef and craftsman. And for an avid surfer, the city’s appeal lies in the impressive waves along the coastline.

Nice documentary but there's one factual error: Lisbon's Great Earthquake was in 1755, not 1775.

      - The Portuguese men officially have a military nature that doesn't buy idol fixations of persona, they are all original insight driven; By my standards one cannot be this way without knowledge of the ancients in the Mideast and also in what I know of Yang, or what today I call Psycho-electromagnetism.

      - My confession, I think I can portray a Fado singer with extremely brilliant sound as if beyond physical attributes, you could say the kind of insight individual the modern world could give a straight jacket to.

most if not all videos on Portugal are about Lisbon. There are many other nice cities like Evora in the Alentejo region for example. Its just like The Netherlands, everybody only talks about Amsterdam..yet a city like Utrecht is much much nicer and relaxed to live.

It looks like a beautiful and romantic city, but too silent and too old. The people seem to be mostly elderly people and everything's crumbling. I wish this documentary could show us more of the younger lifestyle options in Lisbon, such as nightlife, modern restaurants, malls and fashion boutiques and other attractions for younger people. It seems like there's lots of history in this place, but it's reliving the history rather than developing itself into the future.

Not only Lisbon is beautiful but the whole of Portugal. Braga, Guimarães and Viana do Castelo, Coimbra, and the areas around the Douro River etc. For a small country there is such a variety of landscape, climate and architecture.
The calçada all over Portugal is uniquely Portuguese, it’s great to see that today it is still being restored and maintained. Hope they continue and also preserve the lovely facades of those lovely azulejo tiled facades.
Portuguese food is good too but I wish restaurants would stop serving rice and chips as an accompaniment TOGETHER.

As a "lisboner" I approve this DW documentary. Lisboa is full of mysteries, history, polite people and the most incredible food you will ever taste (very healthy too). I would add that you SHOULD avoid scammers, usually not even portuguese that roam the streets of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Baixa in search of their next foreign prey. Despite the low life scammers scattered around the touristic places much like Rome, the city is very safe.
In the past years Portugal has relied on tourism (all kinds) to push our economy forward, we portuguese welcome YOU with open arms.

i was just in Lisboa last month.. i guess my mistake was going in high tourist season. there were no local people in the restaurants, usually not even one, and no local people walking in the streets, usually not even one.. very sad.. i was much happier in Evora, Coimbra, Viseu, Guimaraes and Braga, and to some extent in Porto , altho Porto does suffere greatly from over tourism to a large extent.. it is all very sad.
