  • A tsunami which hit Tonga has left island communications crippled, with people overseas anxiously waiting for news of loved ones.
The underwater volcano erupted on Saturday, about 65km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku'alofa.
The eruption, which was heard as far away as the US, caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga.
The authorities have not confirmed any deaths but the scale of the destruction is difficult to establish with phone and internet communications damaged.
But the Red Cross gave some cause for hope, saying reports suggested the damage was not as bad as had been feared.

Tonga is so important to understand ancient cultures of the Pacific Islands and first discoverers of South America. Great people. All the best on this difficult time.

One of my best friends is Tongan and I got to meet a bunch of his family when his folks had their 30th anniversary and they were some of the nicest most welcoming people I have ever met and I hope all the people over there are doing alright this is a terrible thing to happen to such good people.

Mother Nature is amazing! I feel horrible for the people being affected by this but such a force of nature is mind boggling. I'm so happy that international response has been swift. Special shout out to New Zealand, Australia and Fiji!

i live in Samoa and it was kinda around lunch time- i heard a massive boom like ppl were all like looking around- and then the ground started shaking for 8s-7s then it stopped like 30 min's after we heard another boom and then that was the last one- we did get a little bit of heavy wind from the shock wave i think- but i'm just happy my home and my family's safe and best of luck to u tonga!! :D may God be with u all.
