Wonderful work. I wonder whether the invasion stripes would have been painted on the sides of the oil cooler outlet door, or just the bottom.

    Hi David:
I would need tweezers that have completely flat tips and hold the pieces well
I do not mean that the clamp is straight, but that they hold completely flat and not only with the tip.
Where could I buy some like yours?
Thank you and happy new year!!

Did you know that the wings on the P-51 were partially puttied, sanded flush and then coated in aluminium lacquer?

  • TheFunkhouser
    TheFunkhouser Před 21 dnem

Only thing is, irl they used to seal off the panel joins on the tops of the wings behind the guns in combat, made the wing stronger. They didnt have the panel joint riveting there.

You really know your stuff, but perhaps you haven't seen a lot of unrestored WWII era planes vis a vis zinc chromate green. Inside spaces it's all zinc chromate green-- seems like a very thin coat, but bright. Areas like cockpits where the bright color might show through a window or canopy--that's likely to be olive drab. When I was a kid building models (not as good as yours) the color designation zinc chromate green was completely baffling to me. I found the color in the hobby store, but it seemed odd. Despite close scrutiny of every single photo I could find, I never saw anything that looked like zinc chromate. Of course most were B&W. Later when I visited air museums it was inside every landing gear housing, access panel.
btw thoroughly enjoyed your DC3 build. In about 1969 I got to fly in a DC3, after seeing it through the window at Logan Airport, Boston for 3 hours waiting for the weather to clear. (Imagine waiting for Santa, x 10) Even at 13 years old and that far back I knew flying on it was historical and a great honor. I was flying with my Polish grandmother. The DC9 (early version of the MD80) we flew to Boston was difficult for her. In those days the pilots flew them like stunt planes--pulling a lot of G's, she didn't enjoy it; but the DC3 to Provincetown seemed to fly exactly like her 1948 Plymouth drove-- sort of bouncy in a friendly way. I guess that's what making models is all about, connecting with history, the experience. Thanks for sharing your videos.

I’m working on a diorama with a 1/48 P-51D and A6M3 Zero (really started it about 15 years ago, but life happened and it got shelved). It’s going to be with the Zero shot down just off the beach & struck a couple palms going down with the Mustang circling back over checking out the wreck. After much research over the years I picked up bright aluminum, dull aluminum, burnt/dark aluminum and duraluminum for the Mustang and will be using all but the duraluminum on the Zero. I’m planning to get back on it mid to late next year to have it ready for the model show, September 2021. It’s going to be a keeper.
But I’m starting a diorama for the 2020 model show that will be for sale. It’s a forced perspective. The focus is an Airfix 1/72 A6M2b diving on three 1/350 B-25’s with one of them going down with an engine on fire, but between the cloud layers is a 1/200 B-25 that the Zero didn’t see, lighting him up. 😎 I think I’m going to title it, “Surprise”.
I like building models, but I love creating dioramas. I really enjoy the story telling with only a simple title and a well arranged diorama. It’s really cool just hanging around it listening to people tell themselves the story I was trying to produce.
Anyway, yet another great build. 👍👍 Thanks for sharing your knowledge and great skill. Always enjoy your videos. I’m planning on having my first video posted by or shortly after the new year.
