@Rick huh? how would this make any sense in a video game lol. the entire game is from joel or ellies pov. so how would they show bills backstory and how would it make for fun gameplay? The reason they didnt do it in the game is because they didnt have enough time or freedom to show these things. thats why its explored more in the show. edit: they deleted their comment, stop replying to this as if you knew what they said

It's so strange how yeah, it's a very sad episode, but Bill and Frank got probably the best ending possible for anyone in an apocalypse. Grew old together, lived comfortably, and went out together peacefully.

Arguably they lived better in the post apocalyptic world then in our world today. They didn’t have anyone who could judge them and the could be fulling themselves.
The whole time I was watching, all I could think of is how can people hate someone just because of who they love. I’m bawling again lmao and I’m gonna leave at that.

  • mikkelholst96
    mikkelholst96 Před 3 měsíci +1563

While I miss Ellie and Bill's interactions, I wouldn't change anything about this episode. They managed to retain Bills personality while also putting a different spin on him (he's still paranoid, kinda crazy and very happy for his gadgets), and I'm incredibly amazed at how they still managed to use Bill to further motivate Joel. Contrary to the game, where Bill is more an example of a loner that pushes anyone away, which shows Joel what he does not want to be, the series uses Bill to point out the significance of finding purpose through another person. Two very different methods of motivating, but the outcome is still very much the same for the story. Oh, and the performances and storytelling in this episode are top tier and definitely calls for nominations.

    • Wynneception
      Wynneception Před 3 měsíci +84

In both incarnations Bill is a foil to Joel. In the games, he exhibits all Joel’s worst characteristics taken to an extreme. In the show, he sort of shows what kind of person Joel can aspire to be and what hope he can aspire to have (in particular, hope for a family) despite all he has lost.

    • ShadowPhoenix82
      ShadowPhoenix82 Před 3 měsíci +38

Hard agree, they did an excellent job maintaining Bill's purpose in Joel's story even while shifting his trajectory the way they did. Awesome take.

    • ShadowPhoenix82
      ShadowPhoenix82 Před 3 měsíci +5

@Jarred Brooks interesting, I did not find the dinner scene out of character, especially considering it was 10 years before current smuggler Joel and Tess.
Regarding the sex scene, I agree with you in regards to sex scenes in general. I do recognize that sometimes it actually does propel the story and character development, but often I consider it more than I need to see. But for me, I just look away. I don't count it against the show as it didn't last long or was tasteless in my opinion.

    • mediumvillain
      mediumvillain Před 3 měsíci +2

I would have liked to see this show do an interpretation of the original curmudgeonly loner game version of Bill and the not at all romantic cautionary tale he represents, but I cant really complain too much, they had a story they wanted to tell and executed it impressively. They faked game players out with the time jump where they're fighting lol

I love the subversion they did with Frank and Bill. Bill in the game is a bitter and lonely person, you see in him what Joel could potentially become if he continues to deny himself from loving and being loved. Bill is what Joel should avoid becoming by opening himself to loving Ellie.
Bill in the show is the complete opposite. Bill is what Joel could potentially become if he allowed himself to love and be loved. Bill becomes what Joel should aspire to be.
It still uses Bill's character to tell the audience and Joel the same message, it just does it in the completely opposite way. Yet it works. Flawlessly. Brilliant subversion done right.

Vk Deen Před 3 měsíci +9

I still think they shud of gone closer with the game... imagine seeing what Bill became and then how devastated and broken and bitter he becomes after the loss.... it would then show what Joel could become either way and why there's so much at stake for him. it would be for his own salinity and life. healed and then broken again.... like in the first episode when they talk about dependency and love being the same

    • Travis Mattson
Travis Mattson Před 3 měsíci +56

    • grace calis
grace calis Před 3 měsíci +7

@Vk Deen I don't know. It would've just felt like a complete undoing of the entire reversal they did on Bill's character. Bill and Francis ended up hating each other in the game. Why change so much of their background just to have them end up exactly as they did as the game? If you're gonna change something, you should commit to it.

Just to respond to what Mickey said: I think Bill was attracted to Frank since the first moment, that’s why he allowed him to enter his house and cooked him some food, and Frank kinda noticed it but he wasn’t sure until Bill played the piano, it was beautiful and heart breaking seeing how probably he had to hide his orientation because of the time, and only here in the apocalypse when no one could discriminate him (not even himself), he can let go and be himself. They are some thing you can only notice when you are gay, but that’s also why he was probably so tense and afraid of contact, of admitting emotions, and even afraid of sex, he probably denied it his whole life and that’s why he has a lot of those over masculine attitudes. Such an amazing story really had me ugly crying. Finally some awesome gay stories we can relate to

      LL Před 3 měsíci +38

@Lupaloops Probably longer than 4 years. Living in rural America as a closeted gay man who gone through aids pandemic in his 20s must feel really isolating. The anti government sentiment, Bill's paranoia, isolation, celibacy and machismo makes so much sense once you see it through this lense. All that conveyed through acting and cinematography. This show is so fricking good.

I feel like this comment can be distilled down to "If he loves the finer things in life, is musically inclined, and knows his wines, then by god he's gay damn it." I think the more obvious cues are the social awkwardness. That's either someone who is on the spectrum or has had to hide who he is his entire life.

  • Explody
    Explody Před 3 měsíci +82

Nick Offerman's performance here is **fucking incredible**
The scene at the piano had my jaw dropping -- A man who has never really been vulnerable and who, just based on the political circles he would travel, has probably been hiding who he is for his entire life is suddenly faced with someone who can truly see him and is placed in a position of true vulnerability, and it all reads on his face. There's this amazingly clear picture of fear and apprehension and cathartic relief in that moment. Really amazing imo.

Also, the beautiful score that plays when Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) get married is called "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter. It was also famously used in the movies "Shutter Island" (2010), "Disconnect" (2012) and "Arrival" (2016).

A very cool detail I think it’s their seats at the table. In their first encounter they are on opposite sides, as it’s normal for two strangers. In the end they’re side by side, but only Bill changed his seat as to show how Frank changed completely his life, while he remained the same even with his condition. I think Frank and Bill had genuine attraction for each other.
Frank for one is very friendly and genuine to Bill, complimenting in all his hard work and even surprising etiquette and how cultured he is, Bill himself sees someone who finally appreciates not the things he has, but what he himself has done, all of his effort.
And then the piano scene, with Bill playing and singing, showing his most vulnerable side to this total stranger, and it's obvious he is a man who was so invested in protecting himself, he never was able to let somebody get close enough to love them, maybe he was an introverted, maybe because he knew he was gay and he knew it would put him at risk to find someone... to love him.
And so it all culminates with Bill and Frank going to bed where we see that Bill never actually even got intimate with someone, at this point for who knows how many decades, he is shy, he is inexperienced, he doesn't even know where to put his hands!
and yeah, Frank says he staying because he isn't whore, but I read it more as "I know the idea of this being something more might scare you, it's easier to think about this like sex for shelter, food and a friend, so lets keep it at that until we are ready to call it something else''.
Bill and Frank, lived the most peaceful, loving and healthy relationship of all the others in the apocalypse , and most importantly, they got to choose when to leave this sad and broken world, together in each others arms.

This episode is like, idk, extremely meaningful to me even though I’m a younger gay man, and I don’t really have the exact words to describe why?
I got to watch two older men fall in love and go out on their own terms. I literally cannot even imagine living past 30 because of a combination of just general depression and the environment I live in.
I still don’t know if I’ll ever actually live long enough to get old. But god, does watching this make me want it.

What is "Ozymandias" from? I am assuming it is also the name of a TV show episode and not the poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Though I am curious why the episode is called that. Because if I remember correctly, since it has been awhile since I read the poem, it was about a king who had a statue made of him to create a sort of legacy and for people to remember him, but now all the is left is this plaque at the base of the statue. Not only is the king no longer remembered but the statue is destroyed and has fallen so even the legacy he tried to make doesn't exist anymore.

This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever bitter and living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena.
Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

Bill's line of "We have a job to do, and God help any MFers who stand in our way" feels like a very positive, empowering message about keeping the ones we love safe from harm (and in many cases it IS positive, like how Bill protected Frank). But I think by the end of the series, there's a much darker interpretation of the line we will see play out. Very much in line with story's main theme of how love is both wonderful and terrible, beautiful and horrific.

Bill in the game is showing Joel were he doesnt want to end up a lonely miserable men that pushes everyone away(Bill and Hank had broken up and separated and later you find out he died by suicide cause of the infection)
