@Thomas P. Liberal is the kinder gentler way and it's always been the decent smart choice. It is getting fucked up these days by people taking "Liberal" too far, but wishing to help our fellow man and believing in 'people's' rights instead of 'property' rights has always been the right side of history to be on. "Liberal" "Socialist" (which just means sharing a little better) are way better than Fascism and out of control Capitalism, which appear to be the only alternatives being pushed by the Right.

Panic reactions, “Bad trips” are in service to incredibly powerful, important issues that often haven’t been faced. Appropriate Navigation, or an established “Flight Plan” and more importantly how to handle issues in flight, redirecting the path if needed, not landing because there’s some severe turbulence, is incredibly important and needed for high dose experiences. Having guides, for those inexperienced people who have never been high, is critical. In my opinion.

Right on. What you say fits with the narrative that Pollan puts forth that we lost our way with psychedelics in the West because we never had the proper cultural framework in place to guide users through the experience in a compassionate and constructive way. The fact that the current scientific trials are in many ways following the same guidelines as tradition shamanistic rituals is such a profound example of the world coming full circle.
“In general, the experience tends to be one where you discover that love is the most important thing in the universe. And this Hallmark card platitude suddenly becomes this profundity. And it IS a profundity... we’ve heard it some many times it becomes banal... There’s an interesting line between the profound and the banal, and psychedelics definitely work along that line.”

I like the way Michael Pollan connects the psilocybin experience to meditation. His description of time going from past to future and future to past is similar to Dogen Zenji's writing in Shobogenzo. Most Zen Masters don't seem to have the language to communicate this experience.
Finally scientists can openly talk about psychedelics and altered consciousness. There's so much potential in this research not only for sick people but for us as humans to develop more understanding and compassion towards ourselves and others.

@Chris Schneider oh wow that is scary relatable. Do you also like to drive aggressively and recklessly while screaming the words of your favorite weezer songs? Do you also have trouble maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships? Do you often lack empathy for others? Daddy?
@Chris Schneider does it feel good to hurt others? Do you like to be overtly violent as well? I wouldn't judge you for it. I like it as well. Nothing like sadism to feel powerful and good about yourself.
@Chris Schneider Lots of indicators for that assertion, Chris, sorry. You show a closed mind and a strong anti-liberal bias in your comments here. That is enough for me to feel the scourge of you. It is really good to see this at a time when humankind sorely needs a more robust sense of its spiritual essence and of its connection to the living whole. It is sad, somewhat tragically disappointing, that the cornerstone premises and knowingness for plant-human relationship are missing in Western culture, to the degree that it begins this journey in the same predatory and arrogant fashion as with all other pursuits. Take, take, take, and act as If this is the latest feat of discovery. All information and no medicine. I really liked your talk. I was waiting and wondering if you'd bring in meditation and you did! Much of what you talked about up to that point sounded a lot like mindfulness meditation benefits or outcomes or whatever the word is. You reinforced for me the necessity for me to continue my practice. (I'm an alcoholic and don't want to go to another mind altering substance.) You said at the beginning that Inuit don't have mind altering plants where they live because nothing grows on their traditional lands. Not true. There is abundant plant life in the Arctic, above and below the treelike. The plants are very small. I don't know if any Arctic plants are hallucinogenic. I do know that Inuit Shaman are associated with altered states. Again, thank you for your talk.

If you really want to learn about psychedelics, listen to or read everything by Terence McKenna. Terence’s brother, Dennis, is also an authority on the subject.
23:29 She asked exactly what I need to know. He gave validation to my experience. I can testify to not being able to trip on any known substance yet (30gram mushrooms), (10strip LSD) (1 whole peyote), I don't have access to anything else. Although, I have become proficient in three different meditation techniques and I can achieve auditory and visual events. Daydream, sitting cross leg, mobile.
If what you say is true, you should maybe try to get in contact with the speaker, I'm sure he'd be very interested in taking a closer look at it. Maybe you'd be able to help researchers better understand how all this works
The first time I heard about actual experiences of psychodelics, I noticed that precisely -- that my meditative experiences sounded exactly the same as some anecdotes and effects, that I was achieving the same outcome (on different intensitie depending on my day) with disciplined meditation.
“The Ego is like a tired old dog. You can never put it down, all you can do is let it lay on the back porch and step around it.” - Carlos Castaneda Ram Dass’ guru was named Neem Karoli Baba... Steve Jobs sought him out as well.
You can definitely let the old dog Ego go, but it's not easy. That's why even people who sincerely attempt to do it rarely succeed. Letting the ego go is the whole point of a true Path.
Steve Jobs was a despicable human being to most people in his environment. The technology used by apple was developed in universities and research faculties - paid by taxes from ordinary folk - then given to apple to make profit from. All of the technology inside your iphone was delevoped by government agencies. Steve Jobs is a fraud.
What Pollan refers to in min. 34 of his talk is 'The Road to Eleusis', an awakening book by Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffmann and Carls Ruck, a very worthwhile book to read on this subject.
Funny that people don't know that Gordon Wasson wasn't a banker, but vice president of PR of JP morgan, recruited by the CIA to popularize magic mushrooms.
Just bought his book translated to my language. Only released last month. Libraries here had tons on reservations for the book and I could not just wait.
I am currently in my 70’s …have had many Psychedelic experiences, never experienced flashbacks Worked in a male dominated sector of Technology & found my experiences with Psychedelics actually enhanced technical analysis
Michael, had to come over here because comments were not allowed on your video on mushrooms and Maria Sabina. As a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner of 19+ years, I followed your experience exactly, INCLUDING Maria Sabina. Please read an English version of The Heart Sutra . . . blast your mind! You experienced Emptiness! Which is what I try to cultivate each morning with a page-long version. DMT gave you a moment of what is called the BlissVoid. All is love. You are all. And we are empty. To me, it is like I become a floating eyeball without the eye . . . just pure awareness, with no beginning and no end. I just need a guide because I am a crone, old dancer (your Elder! snork 1952). It is Maria Sabina, I believe. Thank you. Much gratitude. ms. mickeypamo
Hundred bucks says the guy at 24:45 microdosed earlier that morning! I'd recognize that uncontrollable grin and the life in his eyes anywhere! Nothing but love!
I worked in a youth hotel in the beginning of the 70’s. I remember some guests took LSD, had a bad trip and ended up in a mental hospital. And were never the same again. There’re also some rock musicians who never recovered from using psychedelics.
As a guide i never even suggest that any thing could go dark, id prepare the patient know they have the power to change any thing in the experience, YOU CAN LAUGH CRY what ever makes you feel good & reveal anything you don't want or would not choose to see or feel. Now the guides must have training to bring out of a person some unexpected tra uma that might have emerged in a session.
If you could list all the pro's and con's just about psilocybin, the pro's list is really really long, the con's list is very small. Keeping these illegal is the biggest crime against humanity..
I had a very interesting experience with the Google doodle for Earth day last year. I went online to watch Fantatic Mr Fox, and the doodle was a fox waking up from troubled dreams about pollution and waste, and the fox changes his habits to be more eco-minded. That was a kind of micro-miracle to me.
A scientist may stop doing research because the funding dries up or the research is made illegal or for myriad other reasons but no real scientist stops researching something out of embarrassment or from shaming. Those are things that push real scientists to research even more.
24:30 hey I knew this as the "wim hoff breathing exercise" and it does do something very peculiar and you feel that very strong "high" on just breathing oxygen but it doesn't last longer than a few seconds and I never knew what to do of it except that it felt good
The Vietnam war was crucial in the demonization of psychedelic drugs. The Military Industrial Complex quickly figured out that your soldiers aren’t gong to be much good if they’re convinced LOVE is the most important thing in the Universe! So, the war on drugs began. It was a remarkable about face for both society in general, and the psychiatric profession in particular. Richard Nixon was recorded saying, “We’ve got knock this thing right in the Puss, Henry (Kissinger).”
yes, white peasants have always been duped into hatred by their rulers, for centuries, and have hence served as obedient and vicious battering ram on the peasants of the world. no other people hate so irrationally as a euroid, particularly the angloid and his american offshoot.
Exactly! Seems odd that someone so dialled in would overlook the intentionality of the corpiratist neofeudalists whose active hatred of humanity drives their War on Everything. Love and equality and social stability scares the shit out of them. Maybe the dying off of some of the old guard assholes and a gradual rising of consciousness is providing some space for this renaissance
People who have watched the documentary "wild wild country" can relate to the Holotropic breath work mentioned above to the dynamic meditation that osho commmune used to practice .
Soma was also a drug that the ancients used in initiation rites. This was a very potent drug and I am not sure if it was classed as a psychedelic or not but it would put the partaker in a type of slumber for 4 to 5 days.
Tried it for the first time earlier this year. It was like a stronger weed high yet somehow different. Can't explain with just one-3 trips. Was just super excited.
Your description actually makes me more comfortable with psychedelics. I've always been horrified of taking any sort of mind-altering drug, but recently I got over my fear of weed. It puts me a bit at ease to know a psychedelic high is similar to a weed high. Maybe one day I'll give some psychedelic a try.
@Carmela Martinez you can grow them yourself. the spores are legal in most U.S. states. Then you just take a small dose. So instead of something like 3 grams, you just take 0.15 to 0.25 grams.
About flashbacks: I sometimes feel like I'm on acid again. It is often when recalling trips or looking at trippy videos. Or when I am tripsitting people. I get that sort of acidy feeling like you can taste the air, the body high and the high contrast vision. Quite enjoyable as I don't take acid anymore. I got a very strong flashback from this video: chclip.net/video/lZKkUyrklpc/video.html
Some intense orgasms experienced by some women under the effects of small doses of cannabis (with the proper partner, that is) have been described very much like the peak of Pollan's trip on psicocybin: a split in consciousness and the sense of self dissolved and scattered to the wind like a blizzard of things (not necessarily post-its like in Pollan's experience).
The problem I see with this whole discussion is there really isn’t a description of what the benefit is beyond “transformative experience” but even that is described as “love”, “loss of ego”… these are quite basic emotions and foundational human qualities already. So… from what I have heard from LSD proponents is “the experience” seems to be “transformative” for people who maybe didn’t have a cohesive family upbringing, a solid support system, strong foundations, or a well-adjusted calibration for NORMALCY to begin with. And they are “experiencing” what is NORMAL for most well-adjusted stable people or experiencing feelings they haven’t felt before due to up-brings, loss, trauma, ect….
This is the most important book of the 21st century. It raises the awareness of psychedelics as a means to overcome our fear of death and dying. Since there is likely to be a very large amount of dying in the next decade, easing that transition will be "lifesaving" (the most important and meaningful action a person can take). Michael "broke on thru to the other side" and it wouldn't surprise me if he can access it without psychedelics.
Tom O'Neill's 20 years of investigative journalism on the Manson case, culminating in his recent book, has revealed incredible loose ends in the official narrative

If what you say is true, you should maybe try to get in contact with the speaker, I'm sure he'd be very interested in taking a closer look at it. Maybe you'd be able to help researchers better understand how all this works
Absolutely fabulous!!!!
Thank you so much! Very insightful!

" I can control my fear".👍
The first time I heard about actual experiences of psychodelics, I noticed that precisely -- that my meditative experiences sounded exactly the same as some anecdotes and effects, that I was achieving the same outcome (on different intensitie depending on my day) with disciplined meditation.
“The Ego is like a tired old dog. You can never put it down, all you can do is let it lay on the back porch and step around it.”
- Carlos Castaneda
Ram Dass’ guru was named Neem Karoli Baba...

@Christoph Hanke why would they purposely popularise the magic mushroom?
Funny that people don't know that Gordon Wasson wasn't a banker, but vice president of PR of JP morgan, recruited by the CIA to popularize magic mushrooms.
Just bought his book translated to my language. Only released last month. Libraries here had tons on reservations for the book and I could not just wait.

Bro the minute I saw his face I scrolled down to comment this
hahaha! Brilliant observation!
Dude looks like he's on meth not on a mellow ride. His facial expressions give me anxiety just looking at him.
Aw he's cute
He looks 7 years old behind that face.
I worked in a youth hotel in the beginning of the 70’s. I remember some guests took LSD, had a bad trip and ended up in a mental hospital. And were never the same again. There’re also some rock musicians who never recovered from using psychedelics.

Good on google, and michael pollen get this word out!
Good advice to never fight your trip and just go with it.

If you've suffered from OCD, Depression, & anxiety... would psychedelics be beneficial? The reason I ask is I dont wish to lose my mind.

24:30 hey I knew this as the "wim hoff breathing exercise" and it does do something very peculiar and you feel that very strong "high" on just breathing oxygen but it doesn't last longer than a few seconds and I never knew what to do of it except that it felt good
POLLAN FOREVER. Thank you.
i describe it to be like going to the theater the stage energy is bigger than life the music the sets on the stage the louder vocals, the dancing.
Thank you. I'm going to watch "wild wild country" later tonight.
Soma was also a drug that the ancients used in initiation rites. This was a very potent drug and I am not sure if it was classed as a psychedelic or not but it would put the partaker in a type of slumber for 4 to 5 days.
I love his laugh :) Makes me want to laugh too
OLN Agreed! Excellent Post! :)
Tried it for the first time earlier this year. It was like a stronger weed high yet somehow different.
Can't explain with just one-3 trips.
Was just super excited.

Hi! Thank you for sharing? I have PTSD. I need to know how to get the product? Please advise. Thankyou
Took mushrooms yesterday, no regrets! Amazing experience
@Carmela Martinez you can grow them yourself. the spores are legal in most U.S. states. Then you just take a small dose. So instead of something like 3 grams, you just take 0.15 to 0.25 grams.
Where does one go to get a micro dose? Please share. Thanks
yes! It was incredible, and i microdosed.
Magical artist🤤
About flashbacks: I sometimes feel like I'm on acid again. It is often when recalling trips or looking at trippy videos. Or when I am tripsitting people. I get that sort of acidy feeling like you can taste the air, the body high and the high contrast vision. Quite enjoyable as I don't take acid anymore.
I got a very strong flashback from this video: chclip.net/video/lZKkUyrklpc/video.html

Can't epigenetic inheritance within psychedelics be a factor?
Cool topic, glad to have watched this. It is a pity the book is not available in my country. Is there any way to get it? Could anybody share it?

*Who are you ?*
its not a matter of transcending the ego but rather overcoming the notion of self
Reading The Botany of Desire at the moment. Terribly interesting book!
Way to go Google!
Why everything is making sense..!
Brilliant, just got the book :)
