What is Purgatory?

  • We all want to be saints, but the struggle against sin and selfishness can feel overwhelming. There may be days where we might feel satisfied simply making it to purgatory rather than entering the pearly gates. But is this lukewarm path the only way to make it to heaven?
Today Fr. Mike delves into the reality that in this life, we are given every opportunity to prepare our souls for God’s presence. Embracing the sufferings of this moment purifies us the way the refining fire of purgatory would. In this way, we can prepare ourselves in this temporary world to live alongside our Lord in the everlasting world.

@Saved by grace you call yourself "Saved by grace" but have no understanding of what salvific grace is or how to receive it or maybe you do but fail to believe it. Study the early believers like St Irenaeus a disciple of St Polycarp a disciple of St John a disciple of Jesus and you will find much of what the early church knew and is known by the Catholic faith. All is not in the Bible. You might as well have the instructions for a piece Ikea furniture written in several foreign languages with paragraphs missing and the steps not in order but repeated several times in different wording to give different perspectives so you skim over those seemingly repetitious passages to make the piece of furniture. This is the difficulty of reading and understanding the Bible without an authority over its truths. You're building that piece of furniture and not calling on the one who inspired its making. You may think the Holy Spirit is guiding you but Satan is subtle and knows scripture and uses it to cause division and the result is over 40,000 denominations of the Protestant movement yet there is one holy Catholic Church who have built the furniture and covered it with gold for the use of the latria to God.

@Eduardo Hoover saint Longinus? Another catholic miracle?
This of course can be verified in the Bible of curse?
The water that came from HIS side was from his heart Roman soldiers
Would pierce the heart to make sure that those they crucified were dead.
The soldier was below JESUS heart so he had to pierce his side upward
To get to his heart.John 4:14
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Where do Catholics come up with all these fairy tales.
So “saint”Longinus was baptised with the water from the side of JESUS?
LEFT SIDE NOT RIGHT.THE HEART IS ON THE LEFT SIDE.
PLEASE I HAVE NO MORE TIME TO WASTE ON YOU!
      my best to”saint”Longinus.

@Saved by grace Jesus said, "I am the living bread come down from heaven;" Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life;" but He never said I am the living water." He said to the woman at the well that He provides the living water. That living water is the water of baptism; the water that gushed from His side as St Longinus was baptized by during the crucifixion of Jesus after he pierced Jesus' right side making sure He was dead and the Spirit put His indelible mark on his soul. This was the fulfillment of Ezekial's prophesy of the temple in Jah Shammah which is found in His Real Presence in the Catholic Church His kingdom on earth as it is also in heaven. Baptism is what it is meant to be reborn of water and the Spirit. It's not an instantaneous magical thing that happens after praying the sinner's prayer; the magic of the Egyptian priests was just as dead as that.

MANY THINK ITS EASY , BUT ITS NOT. LIKE ITS EASIER TO BE BAD THAN GOOD BUT IF YOUR A REPENTING SOUL YOU WILL MAKE IT, BUT IF YOU DON'T KNOW GOD OR NEVER PRAY. YOUR DOOMED. YOU NEED TO GET SERIOUS WITH GOD AND HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP, BUT YOU NEED TO DISCOVER THE ANCIENT CHURCH AGAIN. ONLY THROUGH ORTHODOX BECAUSE IN THE ORTHODOX FAITH WE PRESERVED THE FAITH OF THE OLD ANCIENT CHURCH.

Unfortunately for followers of Catholicism Not so, because they have trusted Man and not the Word of the Living God. Sad indeed.

I see you've left a lot of comments and you clearly have issues with Catholicism and want to prove some point about being right and ok, that's your thing, fine. I'm not interested in trying to prove I'm right. I was just letting you know what Catholics believe and why. I trust that after Jesus ascended he came to other people and had them leave messages affirming his love and mercy. I also believe that the Blessed Mother intercedes for us to her son and I trust in the theologians who prayed, debated and investigated the visions of Mary and the saints writings over the protestant reformation and amateur "scholars" who post on CHclip

Here a song I like for this video.
    Purify my heart
    Let me be as gold
    And precious silver
    Purify my heart
    Let me be as gold
    Pure gold
    Refiner's fire
    My heart's one desire
    Is to be holy
    Set apart for you Lord
    I choose to be holy
Set apart for you my master
    Ready to do your will
    Purify my heart
    Cleanse me from within
    And make me holy
    Purify my heart
    Cleanse me from my sin
    Deep within
    Refiner's fire
    My heart's one desire
    Is to be holy
    Set apart for you Lord
    I choose to be holy
Set apart for you my master
    Ready to do your will
    Refiner's fire
    My heart's one desire
    Is to be holy
    Set apart for you Lord
    I choose to be holy
Set apart for you my master
    Ready to do your will
And I am ready to do your will
Make me ready to do your will

@Trisha Perry im not completely understanding. Are you saying there is no purgatory? I don’t agree with that if you are however i do think we should be thinking more in terms of what Jesus went through because he loved us and on top of it, it must have been even more difficult for him because he was thinking about those souls who will not make it to heaven. He must have felt horrible that he went through all of that and still they will not make it. Like when i think it was Veronica that was crying for him and he says, do not cry for me but for yourselves and your children. It’s heartbreaking!!

There is NO purgatory ,period ,full stop! Our works ,holy intent that they may be is still grounded in Sin, but Jesus the sinless man (Being God himself- Incarnate) is the PERFECT offering, no adding sacrifices and additional idolatrous rosary prayers will avail you much. You are dismissing the PERFECT sacrifice , The Lamb of God who takes away the SINS of the world ,not some ALL (who trust in Him) So that we may not boast of our attempt to steal away the Glory of our thrice Holy God ( Father Son and Holy Spirit )This man (priest) is NOT Born-Again as Christ instructed us to become YET you Catholics persist in calling Him Father. I came to the TRUTH 22 years ago and Jesus called me out of the Catholic faith which is NOT grounded in the Truth of Scriptures - The Holy Bible Sola Scriptura and NOT man's tradition ,God Bless you for reading but if you are still STUCK in Roman Catholicism- Come Out ! @Patrick Melling Your wife sounds like a good woman not because she is Baptist but because she speaks according to the Word of God- The Bible. I agree with you that the traditions of the Catholic church can be spiritually uplifting and when conducted in Latin even 'feels' holy but it is not. I have Muslim friends that swear by the beauty of quoting the Quran in Arabic but it is absolutely against Christ they are sincere but sincerely Wrong Jesus the Word that became flesh gave us the written word for this very reason. Please read the account of our Lord when speaking to the woman at the well. Don't go on 'feelings ' it is fickle but go on the unchanging Living Word of God nothing else not even my opinion.

@Julia Buonincontro I always appreciate sincere prayers 🙏 as the Bible (Word of God) teaches that the righteous prayer of a Believer availth must. Again in a spirit of Truthfulness I DID watch the entire video , I have no issue with this priest's hair as many have commented on how good it looks, I repudiated his stance on Purgatory that has absolutely no Biblical basis for. I have read the entire Bible more than several times , yet I am not a scholar and Not Once have found any Biblical evidence for this priest's false assumption. Now the true church that Christ has called us to is the one that All true Believers belong to when we are baptized into Him as adults with understanding of scripture and still accepting that we are not perfect, but perfected by Him (Jesus the Christ the Lamb of God) who takes away ALL our sins when we trust in His Finished work , which cleanses those before the cross and all those that have and continue to believe after, because God is outside of time this is obviously possible may you and all adherents of the Roman Catholic faith come to realize and accept this in Jesus mighty name I pray. God Bless 🙏♥️

“My God, I offer you all my works, my amusemente, my sorrows and my joys; the good and bad moments of this present day for Your greater glory and honour”
I love it, i loved starting out the days prAying (it was usually followed by praying every prayer we knew) and would like to pass it on to my kids. There are no biblical references to many of the things the Roman Catholic church teaches! My suggestion would be that you stick to the simplicity of Christ's teaching about loving God and our neighbours as shown in the gospels and ignore all the superstitions and heresies dreamed up by humans - usually to enhance their own power or prestige! - over the ages!

I am not, nor ever have been a Catholic, but believe that I had a vision, dream, or remembrance of myself sitting in a heather gray void. I came to believe that this was a level of purgatory. I was seated on a bench like you find in a locker room. So I was comfortable being seated but could see nothing around me but the gray void. Then I lifted up my head and started calling and shouting "JESUS SAVE ME." "LORD JESUS SAVE ME." Then I popped out of the grey void. AND was not there anymore. But here. I have come to believe that there are different levels of purgatory. Some possibly darker than others. Depending on faith & obedience to God. Like a child being sent to the corner to think about your behaviors.

@INiko Look up Dr. Brant Pitre - Purgatory in the Bible. I can't post the link for the video here. However, he explains one of the parables in which Jesus teaches us about purgatory. There are others as well. There are also many references to purgatory in the writings of Paul and John's letters and the Book of Revelation. Just as the word Trinity is not written in the Bible, but the reality of it is definitely present in the Bible, so is purgatory.

@INiko Right, but don't disclude the possibility.
My experience was very REAL to me. And I love THE LORD AND HIS written WORD. But as Saint John said; Oh the books and story's that should have, could have, AND May have, been written.....
Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, all the things that God has prepared for us.

He said, with all the crime in this world, crooked leaders removing God from our lives, chaos and sins against God trying to make us believe it's the norm and the suffering throughout.......What if this is Purgatory?

    *Fr, thanks for this topic,*
*I feel it could be explained further.*
*purgatory is both in this life and after death.* Mostly many of the sufferings, spiritual darkness, ailments, unjust treatments. ...are all counted for the correction of a soul in the fire of tribulation, during this lifetime, that is purgatory.
*God is not always waiting to put one soul to the purification of purgatorial fire, until one's death....* he starts the salvific action, in each moment and it is easily accomplished with the willing souls, who could endure the cross and follow Christ.
*In many or some cases,* where sudden death happens and souls who finish the race, with not so serious sins , yet with not fully dressed up to meet the Bridegroom , will be going to purgatory after death.
*Hence purgatory is both in this life,... that is well and good, and continues to the next where the need arises.*

Do you mean that very same Bible that was compiled by man? By the Catholic Church? You understand that the Bible was not a thing for the first 300 years after the Death of Christ? The church wrote the Bible because the church is the keeper of tradition and the message of God. The apostles were the first bishops.

    • Ann Dougherty
      Ann Dougherty Před 2 měsíci

@wonderspace90, please read Colossians 2:18-19. This talks about false teachers and visions that are truly not of Christ. Visions, dreams, and prophesy were all Apostolic gifts from the Holy Spirit. Those were used to testify to the true Church of Christ in the time of the Apostles when they were building the church. Now that we have the Bible, we have the Word of God. It is a closed canon. Read Revelation 22:18-19. Anyone who adds or takes away from Scripture is in grave danger. I say this to warn you. Test what these saints said against Scripture. If they are talking of purgatory and the Bible isn't, they are wrong, not Scripture.

They were revealed to some of our Saints. For example Padre Pío, St. Faustina, Pope St. Gregory the Great (thanks to him we have Gregorian Masses for the dead), St. Gertrude the Great and, Our Lady of Fatima talked of purgatory.

It is important to focus on Our Lord's Jesus Christ words here. the powers flow not from heaven but from Earth to heaven >> . Whatever you loose Or Unbind on earth will be loosed or unbound in Heaven" He gave the Authority to Peter and his successors, that even some ancient strictures can be loosened, other wise, all those who believe in Christ but are separated from the One true Holy Catholic and Apostolic church had no recourse. That's the reason purgatory can be the final cleansing place to rid them of foul wounds and warts of the enemy who imbibed them with foolish pride and blindness. No other explanation is needed, The Kingdom of God is on going and a vibrant kingdom and the power rest with his Bride.

I feel like a child and see myself as a child there, instantly I am smiling and safe. I don't seem to bother God at all! I do not believe in Purgatory because that doctrine is a manmade one. I grew up Catholic and wanted to be a nun. That did not happen -- life and traumas did happen. God is not one religion. The Bible is clear. God is God. ❤️

I follow a very select number of CHclip channels. I follow The Thomistic Institute which has helped me tremendously to learn and grow in faith. On this particular subject they had one lecture where this topic was studied.
You have a good friend but on a particular day you steal $20 from him. This ends up as a great loss of trust from your friend. Eventually your friend forgives you and the friendship is restored. Still, that does not change that you still owe your friend the $20. That is what Purgatory is is about so that balance and justice is also served. We then enter into heaven spotless. Obviously this is a very rudimentary example but you can get the general idea.

Purgatory is synonymous with compassion. It is an invitation to suffer with the Lord to align our hearts with the love he has given us. Christ had already given us this invitation when he asked us to pick up our cross, but God wants us to be saved so much that he has forgiven our missteps if our heart is ultimately oriented towards him. This is no excuse not to strive for heaven directly but a sign of his infinite grace and mercy. Purgatory is for when we have lived our lives knowing in our hearts that we have strived towards what the Lord has asked of us, but we have (in our brokenness) not quite met the mark and need correction.

@Iris Gonzalez - Caulder What are you trying to say? I didn't say it was. He welcomed us to suffer with him as he suffered for us. We were going to suffer anyway, so he taught us to suffer well. God doesn't suffer in a divine sense because that is unique to us, but Jesus suffered as a man as he was fully man and fully God. We couldn't truly follow him if he didn't. This is pretty standard in Church teachings.

I have a question, I know that like the video said, I can use the experiences of the day for God’s glory, because like father mike said it has a purpose. But, I personally feel a lot of times I want to pick how I feel today or this day or that. I might want to feel happy for a long time and feel no discomfort and in todays world it feels easy to give yourself a quick happy mood boost by pulling up a movie, watch CHclip videos, playing music. I feel like I do this too much without considering what God wants me to feel. I question, does God like that I listen to so much music and enjoy it so much? Or does he want me to stop or listen to much less? Is it wrong to want to try to enjoy my life to the maximum by giving myself joy, but would it possibly interfere with what God wants me to be feeling . What do you guys think, I pray and pray for an answer to this but it’s been hard hearing a clear answer from the lord.

@po18guy It’s obvious that you do not believe the Holy Bible is the “ INSPIRED WORD OF GOD ALONE”
Romans 3:25 KJV Whom God hath set forth to be a PROPITIATION THROUGH “FAITH” IN HIS BLOOD “( ALONE)
To declare his righteousness for the REMISSION OF SINS that past through the forbearance of God.
It’s also obvious you do not have “ FAITH ALONE” in Jesus blood to wash your sins clean, and the sins of the world.

I will ask: Where in the bible is the "bible"? Where in the bible is "bible alone"? Where in the bible is "bible as sole rule"? Where in the bible is the 'scripture' which lists the table of contents? Where in the bible is "faith alone"? Where in the bible is the "sinner's prayer"? Where in the bible are "altar calls"? Where in the bible is "Trinity"? None of this is biblical. How on earth can you believe so much that is not biblical? I say, humble yourself and trace Christianity back to Christ and the Apostles. 33AD. Then come forward. You will see that most of your unbiblical ideas appeared in Europe, 1500 years later. Thus, I call you to truth but I must reject all of your ideas as unbiblical.

Christ said to the good thief,
"This day you will be with me in paradise "

Paradise is NOT heaven! Christ had not ascended yet. Read 2 Peter 3:18-20 and 2 Peter 4:6. Christ descended to the dead and preached the Gospel to them. Heaven was opened after the resurrection and after He ascended.

Every morning, before I get up off the bed, I say the Morning Offering. It is a simple prayer, easy to memorize, and it offers up all the experiences of the day for your own sins, for those already in Purgatory and for the living that need salvation.

In Jesus wonderful name. HE has paid it ALL in FULL - FINISHED He cried at the Cross the real question is Do You Believe HIM ?

@Jonny Ulloa Catholics do not worship Mary, we venerate her for the same reason Jesus did, because she was His mother. Praying to Mary was the whole point of the wedding feast narrative if you read it. The men could have gone to Jesus, He was standing right there, but they turned to Mary to intercede for them. Jesus would have turned them away, He said it was not His time, but Mary interceded and the men got their wine...because Jesus honors His mother. Praying for her intercession is taught to us in this story. None of the Saints are dead. They are alive and aware in God's presence and can speak on our behalf.

@Raymond Gilbert I am not denying mary, I am saying that she cannot save you and Im sure both of us agree on that. I am denying worshipping her and denying praying to her. she was Jesus's mother on earth, but Jesus is the one who died for our sins and was sacrificed by God for us to believe in him

@Jonny Ulloa The Bible clearly demonstrates that we come to Jesus through Mary. Read about the wedding feast at Cana in John ch. 2. To deny Mary's role in leading you to Christ, you are also denying this important chunk of the Gospel. You may also note in the Transfiguration that those who had died before were alive and well in the afterlife and aware of the affairs of earth. Otherwise how could they have joined Jesus on the mountain? The Bible you tell me to read is a Catholic book and I have read it.

But to really be saved, you must have a close relationship with God, and the only way to do that is through prayer, no pastor or priest, no saint or mary, no witch or warlock, no friend of family member, no bible alone can get you a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. It is only through prayer where God will let you know how to live for him and how to work for him and glorify him. May the Grace of Jesus be with You

I feel like I’m in purgatory now .. Is this an extension of life - more challenges, more “stuff” ..
I don’t know anymore where Catholics are going with all this. I just pray and hope God has mercy - I trust He does ..

Yes, life is part - or all - of the process by which we are purified. Some achieve purity in this life, but it usually requires much suffering. When we suffer, we are mot Christ-like. Saint Paul teaches that we are assured suffering in this life. When you suffer, consider offering that suffering to God for good purpose. He knows what to do with it.

@Mary Askin If our sin is such an affront to a thrice Holy God then surely the punishment of all the World has to be servere as indeed you noted it was , then the fact that I or You need not be judged as Jesus Christ has paid it all, then This IS Certainly Good News (The Gospel) and God in His Holiness and complete Justice and even taking into account His Supreme Love cannot and will not judge us as this would mean that He has completely ignored the supreme sacrifice that He has required and you have what we call Double Jeopardy, God cannot and Will not comprise His Holiness and we are the recipients of His Perfect Love as scripture continually shows us. That is what makes our Christian Faith so simple, but complete and we cry out Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God. God Bless Mary 🙏.
