I never read the books but I have the 1984 film and the 2000 series. I love, just love this series but the ending of the 2021 version rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I need to read the books. This movie just made me say, “eww.”

    • Christine Musselman

Also, I'm sure the ending of the 2021 movie was odd to you is because it's the first half of the book and so it cut off half way through the story. The second half of the story will be covered in the second movie which will be released in a few years.

You owe yourself to read the book. Denis' movie is the best adaptation of them all, but the book is amazing.

@Crystal Robinson I may change my mind after Part 2. I've just gotten really particular about my novels these days and it is hard to just jump into one even if the story is well written.

    • Crystal Robinson

@sumoni Ohhh seriously even if Sci Fi isn't your genre of reading, Dune is well worth the read, there is so much thematically going on that it goes beyond being your run of the mill Sci Fi novel series, it actually has much more in common with Fantasy as far as political intrigue and world building goes. Seriously for me it is up there with Novel series like LOTR, Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth and Harry Potter. That's why I am so stoked to see it, I watched the original David Lynch movie back in the day before I read the novels and realized quickly that David Lynch never actually read the books cause theme & plot wise he missed it by more than a mile. But I suggest reading it after watching Part 2, I can tell by casting, cinematography and musical score that Villeneuve has hit the nail on the head as far as nuance and character development for the movie, but like all movies you can't get everything in to the movie so there are bound to be somethings left out.

@Crystal Robinson What a coincidence! I love the movies but only read a couple books. And my husband read the books and hates the movies or won't watch them too. I agree based off the books I've read. There is also just no way they can put all the details and plotlines in thr movies because it would probably drive away some audiences. They really tried with the newer IT films but it still barely scratched the surface. I have to try really hard with the HP films to separate them from the books. I'm glad I didn't read the Game of Thrones books after the fans have complained so much about the series.

And I will never read Dune. It is just not my type of genre anyways but I love the Dune movie and wouldn't want to be overly critical of Part 2.

@sumoni I'm like that about Stephen King Novels, I read most of his classic horror novels in my teens before I saw the movies and can honestly say that I have rarely liked any of the movies adapted from his best works, particularly movies like Carrie, Christine, Firestarter, Cujo, The Dead Zone, It, The Stand etc. Cujo being the worst. The thing with his novels is that so much of what is happening to the characters is internal dialogue and emotional struggle that its hard to adapt it correctly for the screen. Now I don't say this to knock the adaptations of his novels cause had I not read the novels first many of them I would have liked on their own. Particularly De Palma's version of Carrie with Sissy Spacek and I absolutely loved both versions of It, the TV movie in the 90s with Tim Curry's performance of Pennywise scared the crap outa me as a kid. And the new one is incredible, as well as the new TV adaptation of The Stand, but you just don't get the same intense fear & drama factor that you get from reading the novels first. I always recommend watching the movies made of his novels first then reading the books. Makes for a much better experience.

@Christine Musselman A couple of the actors said they chose not to because it would make them nitpick over the film. I think others follow the same rule. I know people that have never read Harry Potter because they only watched the movies. My husband won't watch any movies he has read the book about because he finds it boring once he knows the story. Not everyone does both for different reasons. Especially if they are not avid science fiction fans.
