As Facebook would put it: It's complicated.
it might seem like a backwards move, but more storage cells allows for all kinds of cache trickery to let drives like this actually deliver pretty damn strong performance at a low cost - as long as you don't push it far beyond it's expected use-case.
All in all it's a smart choice done for a reason: To deliver fast storage that will fit MOST people's needs just fine at peak performance while keeping costs very low (for Intel anyway). It's not a thing we should resist just because the storage cells are technically inferior. The more storage cells you have the more you can mask any weaknesses and the result tends to be pretty damn good with a good margin. Just because SLC is technically superior does not mean that's what you want. It would be terribly expensive/small for very little tangible benefit. Yes, it might last forever, but will you care after 10 years when the drive is totally outdated anyway?
As long as you are somewhat aware of your hardware needs in terms of the stress you will put on it (such as professionally rendering hundreds of gigabytes of data every day) then you're fine. Not a bad product all things considered, even though I still think Samsung's products are still far ahead on performance/price for discerning customers.

You made a very negative video, about actually a great product, cheaper and bigger than any otther sata ssd, with reasonable much faster speed then them. But lets still complain that we cannot copy terrbytes every day! Ridiculous. Than in the end with silent voice: yeah okay but actually its good.... after 10 minutes of complaining...

Samsung has a 4 terabyte qlc SSD, for five hundred bucks. A year ago a 4 terabyte SSD was well into the $1,400 range. for somebody who will just be using these as storage drive for games and whatnot, that is a very welcoming advancement of technology for any normal users pocketbook. I myself use a faster smaller boot drive, and then plan to get either this, or the Samsung one for my steam drive and games and whatnot.

So essentially its a technology for budget SSD/NVME to bring better performance to casual gamers/PC users. I think its a good thing, sort of. The issue is for people that don't look into the difference for their rendering and editing computers. Really though if you're using your rig for audio/video work, like anything else, don't get the lower end option as you'll be giving up something for the reduced price.

For the read time versus number if layers graph it apears that 4 layers stores 4 times the data and takes 4 times as long to read. That would mean that the data per second on such a cell would be the same as slc memory.

There is no benefit in SSD's! After years of not using it and waiting for better storage solutions... now they getting worse than in their beginning. 2x Multiboot Systems, some programs 3 games (of course 40-120gb per game) and a SSD will blow up!

+BoogieDownProduction By the way: I do not install my games like a idiot on system C:. But most idiots do that, which buy ssds. Naturally you will benefit with 2x SSD disks (1x System Drive with multiple Bootrecords, 2x Data Drive vor Games and Apps) in your system but they must be much more improved first. I wait the next years for a SSD-2 TERRADRIVE (livelong durability)

    • redstoned4ever
      redstoned4ever Před 13 dny

+BoogieDownProduction That's only true if you have not enough ram! My Gaming PC System runs very fast because its "game optimized" and i have a second PC for work (other stuff). SSD would be great if it has: more durability, more space, less price. But this would not happen because of idiots like you = let me explain: You buy trash (SDDs at launch to today) because it is (was) new and hype. The reality is: it is trash nobody NEEDS ( at this very moment).

    • BoogieDownProduction
      BoogieDownProduction Před 16 dny

What an ignorant comment. Use SSD correctly and it's actually the biggest benefit you can get. You don't need your games to be installed on an SSD you fool. You need the OS to be on it, this improves performance greater than anything else you can do to a computer

8:22 baffled by what you're trying to say. The numbers don't make any sense.
Writing at 1 GB/s for 7.5 minutes (or 450 seconds) constantly ends up with a 450 GB file.
Writing at 1 Gb/s for same, 56.25 GB.
Writing at 1 GB/s for 20 minutes (1200 seconds) constantly results in a 1.2 TB file. 1/8 again? 150 GB.
So no scenario matches the speed you said.
24 GB written in 450 seconds is an average of 53.3 MB/s.
24 GB written in 1200 seconds is an average of 20 MB/s.
Neither are anywhere close to 1 GB/s.
Ok, seeing it now. The 24 GB in 1200 seconds or 20 minutes is 1.2 GB/min which no one uses. It's only 3% of SATAIII's 5,806,080,000 megabit per fortnight bandwidth. No modern drive will be a bottleneck for that.

A 120Gb SSD can easily write 2Gb daily for 50 years. If they still work after 3 years then there's a good chance they could last for decades. There have been 240Gb TLC SSDs that have had hundreds of Tb written to them.

I think SSD is petty cheap if compare with rams.

I have to object: NOBODY will actually only half fill their ssd so where is the point in having super slow QLC cells and half of its capacity as SLC cache? I just don't get it.

--- A CEO's job is to maximize return for the company's shareholders. It doesn't matter whether doing so involves many or few "buyers." The successful business of a friend of mine has TWO customers. He'd love to have as customers all six of the businesses that could utilize his company's software. Maybe someday ...

--- "Casual users" make MANY sub-optimal decisions. It isn't the electronics industry's job to refrain from selling products that "casual users" might misuse. If a casual user has no tech savvy friends, he should make some.

Stop calling me a "nobody." For both performance and endurance reasons, I scrupulously keep my SSD utilization below 60% of capacity - most of the time below 50%. It's not at all hard to occasionally move data from silicon to rust.

so this is for people who want more than a sata ssd but will never fully use a 970? seems legit actually.

the comments are from trolls and i don't believe this video. I think it is a problem of drivers or firmware. This can also be an issue with ms windows 10.

Stop this bla bla. The visible truth is that SSDs are way better than a SATA drive for 99% users.

    • Number Six

Your assertion makes no sense. SSD is a solid state storage technology; SATA is a bus interface. The majority of consumer level SSD's sold today are SATA devices.

What? What? Intel is not known for their aggressive pricing. I am peeing my pants. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Linus, you are very entertaining but Canadian should not lie. Intel is the biggest rip off. You really should stop being Intel's whore.

    What a coincidence:
I recently learned that Colossus at Bletchley park used 5 levels in its tube logic - which was considered the maximum reliable number of channels. Luckily baudot teleprinter code is 5 bits :)
    This was called BI-Quinary.

Weird thing I noticed and I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not, around 4:51 when Linus says three he holds up his pointer, middle and thumb. Most of the time when someone uses those fingers to indicate the number three they are deaf, hard of hearing or someone who knows ASL. most people hold up the ring finger instead of the thumb for this but you can't do that in ASL because that could be confused with "W". Point being has he ever mentioned or done anything with sign in his videos or am I just looking waaaaaay to into this
