macOS Gatekeeper (the thing that pops up to ask before running applications) is much more tame and palatable. It only pops up for new applications. As in, *not* for every time you open certain system settings, and only the *first* time an application is opened. Some Windows software prompts UAC every freaking time and it’s infuriating...

It was not that bad, but it required a lot better hardware than the machines it was most commonly found. I remember my brothers laptop ran it and it was a horrible mess on that.

I remember buying Windows Vista Ultimate along with Office 2007 Home Edition. It ran decently in our computer, and it was a somehow old machine for the time we upgraded the system, since it was acquired in 2005 and we upgraded our XP to Vista in 2008. Anyways, we used Vista for a good amount of time without the mountain of disturbances everybody seemed to had back in the day.

you forgot about my 2 favourite features in Vista. Video as background and Voice Dictation! they were superb!
but i still understand why it was hated. what i don't understand is why Windows 8 or even 8.1 was hated. it was just residual hate from the days of Visat and people not wanting to let go of Win 7 i guess.

I still had vista on my desktop gaming machine until a month ago. I have now upgraded it.... To Windows 7! I don't play modern games. Only those from between 2000 and 2012ish. Many games after that require better graphics cards than what I have. I plan to run it offline (no network) once Microsoft remove support for Windows 7 next year

I was one of the few people had no issues with Vista, I do preffer 7. But there's fucking ME, Vista's so much better than ME... ME was such a disaster, that's the one I remember. I miss aero, I also liked how the alt tab thing looked 3D on Vista, I wish 10 had it.
PS: It's absolutly baffeling how no one remembers 2000, 2000 was pretty neat, one of the more wide spread pre XP NT Windows OS, anyone who had a bit of experience knew that ME was to not touch and 2000 was the future at the time. To me, 2000 was the 7 of it's time, except of being a slightly upgraded ME, it was a whole new thing that would later give birth to XP, 7 and 10.

haha, I am still running Windows Vista on one of my machines. I use it in the lounge to play movies, music, and surf the web on the large television. It still works fine, and the UI is quite nice even by todays standards (although I am mainly a Mac user these days). I remember the jokes at the time, "WHAO, Vista boots in only six and a half minutes !!!" .. LOL, yeah that part is slow.

    Funny intro!
Windows Vista is hands down one of the best operating system ever created. Far better than Windows 7, one of the most important things being that Windows Vista ran the DOS clone well and mostly without issues. Windows 98SE is probably the best, pure DOS and DVD capability, also native for the 3dfx cards.

We have a IT Company. We made a lot of money on Vista because we had to take it out. One client's employees were so angry that when the owner of their headquarters came to visit, they about lynched him. I thought he would fire them all. He got the entire satellite location all new XP computers. Some we had changed to XP so they could survive in the meantime. There were massive, crippling problems. VPNs were unusably slow and disconnected, unexplained program slowdowns to where you were waiting for keystrokes, and many, many programs that didn't work for it. It was MORE susceptible to viruses than XP and viruses could easily elevate it's own privileges SP1 was a massive patch roll-p that made it usable and could work, with existing software better. SP2 was less of the same. I agree, but the time Vista had it together, Windows 7 was here.

I agree with you on almost every point. If Vista and Windows 7 started off at the same time for support and upgrades, I would take Vista over Windows 7, hands down. It is a much better looking interface but cost some cycles to make it like that. Windows 7 can run on hardware that Vista cannot run well on or at all. It was a fundamental transition driven by the 64 bit world which meant much had to be rewritten and the security. The Apple OS was built on FreeBSD UNIX that requires the elevating of privileges also. Windows was the only operating system that didn't have that type of protection, it's just that Windows put an Interface on it so the average user could know when it was needed and not stop the install. XP 64-bit was like a beta of 64 bit and the only people using it were high-end CAD people. XP brought 64 bit to the masses but the problem was people needed to use 32 bit because there were many 16 bit programs from the Windows 16 bit world that were being relied on and they needed the 16 bit subsystem. The 64 bit didn't have that, it only had the 32 but subsystem, and there was a lot of equipment that didn't have 64 bit drivers. 64 bit Vista was very robust, it's just that you couldn't do anything with it even though people wanted to. Time was the only thing needed, and time brought Windows 7, the demise of 16 bit apps, the availability of 64 bit drivers, and line-of-business software that could run in the Vista and Windows 7 world, and the tipping point where more than CAD users could use the extra RAM afforded by 64 bit.
Windows 7 long outlasted Windows 8. The Windows 8, 8.1, and to a lesser degree 10, was Microsoft's way to claw their way back into the mobile market. The Zune/Metro/Modern/Universal apps were an attempt to pull their ubiquitous desktop users to their mobile and failed. It will be shut down by the EOY. They've ditched Internet Explorer and Edge, and doing the same thing that Google did, build on a stripped down version of Firefox. They gave the business mobile market that they owned when they dropped Windows Mobile with many thousands of business and productivity apps, dissed their developers, and went with the gaming operating system based on their gaming platform, Zune, for WP, which had no apps except what Microsoft made, and multitasking only worked with Microsoft apps. Like Vista put the MAC on the map, Windows Phone put Android on the map.

My old school had unsupported mac versions that were very insecure, and they always had update messages, though the school refused to update, and the computers stopped working one day; the school didn't tell us why, and they replaced them with really crappy school-grade MacBook laptops, but that was only around where I left, and we got new tech teachers almost every year. Probably the teachers got fed up with having such crappy computers and maybe people bugging them to update or getting computers hacked. Only the teachers got new computers, and they always had the best, up-to-date ones. Right before I left, they got Chromebooks, Like my computer, but they are way better. Our new school has really crappy ones that have only like 20 MB storage, most taken by OS, and they go really slow, but maybe that's just from me having 3000 pages of a stickman about to hug a windows logo saying hug the window. But they are slow without that.

i'll put it this way..... in order to progress, change needs to be made. vista was that change. It was difficult because it was new and new things were being tried and, over time, a better grasp was had over these changes. this is trial and error, or even research and development. you try something new, find out what needs to be fixed and improved, do it, build the new one with the fixes and changes, do it again and keep improving it. The only difference was that vista changed quite a few things at once but look at the results as Linus mentioned. Lots of these these days are based on things that vista brought. So thank you, Vista..

How dare you to compare WinVista with Win7 ? WinVista is the worst OS together with Win31, Win95, Win98 &, Win10 !!!
WinXP & Win7 is the best of all WinOS. They are more forgiving towards new hardware... (Motherboard & CPU is not included)...

Windows 10 is by far the most stable and productive version of Windows imo.

Windows 10 restarted my pc without asking me to update it. Never had that problem with 7 or xp. Windows 7 is the most productive one.

My dad also had it 'till 2017, until his laptop (from same era!) decided to fry its motherboard. One crappy Fujitsu-Siemens laptop, I hated that thing so much. And I was pleased, as I'm the one who keeps our computers running.
