I got a tp-link smart light and had connections issues so ended up taking it back. Then got the sengled starter kit which was $49 which included the bridge and 2 globes and it works great, much better than the almost $150 for the phillips starter kit. The sengled it now down to $39 for the starter kit, so this is another cheaper option.

I would actually recomend you also adding Kasa Smart Light Bulb by TP-Link - Reliable WiFi Connection, Multicolor, No Hub Required, Works with Alexa Echo and Google Assistant, California Compliant (KL130) to your review. It cost 30 Dollars right now on amazon. It is cheaper then the phillips Hue has no HUB and is better quality then the YEE light. The app also has energy monitoring and an easy way to select colors. It also works with google home and amazon alexa. I haven't tried with Siri/apple.

So, the LIFX and the Yeelight both require an account to operate? Yeah, I'm gonna shell out tens of dollars for light bulbs that stop working when the company goes out of business or decides to stop supporting them. Not gonna buy the Philips either. I guess I should have started with "I don't see the point in any of these things." I have normal, white light bulbs - don't need gimmicky coloured ones - and, when I want to automate them, I sprinkle a little X10 around the place. Yeah, X10 is *really* old tech but it works, I can control it from my phone, my laptop (in fact, any device with a web browser on my network) and even from a handy-dandy keychain remote, and it does more than just lights. I even have a little background script running on an RPi that uses X10 to reset my router when it stops working.

+AntiMosh002 If you cannot see the details under certain colors of light, then your eye is fukked up. Go see a doctor.
Humans get adopted for certain impulses, therefore rendering them invulnerable to said impulses. I have ALWAYS had traditional lightbulbs that glow orange/red, and I just cannot live without them. White and blue lights are either too bright or not bright enough for humans to see properly.
And, even the idea of controlling your lights via an ordinary smartphone is fukked up. The level of vulnerability it puts your house under is ridiculous. Just think about this one scenario: People want to break into your house, and learnt that you use smart lights. All they need to do is get access to the "smart" system, and they can immediately control what you can see, and what you cannot see.
Summa summarum, DO NOT BUY SMART BULBS! They are dangerous.

    • AntiMosh002
      AntiMosh002 Před 13 dny

If you never tried smartbulbs how should you know... (I once thought the same way, but now that i own smart-bulbs for years, i would miss them terribly.) Would you (for example) like to shave under warm-white lights? Never ever. You cannot see any details even if its bright enough. That is the reason stores mostly use 'neutral' or cold lights because of the level of details. If you are tired - switch to cold-white, wanna get tired switch to warm-white or even colors of the orange/red range. You wouldn't believe the different effects of colored lights to mind/body. Once you are able to choose the right lighting and brightness for every circumstance, you most likely never buy standard bulbs again. Also there's no need for a extra dimmer or switch that has to be installed. Maybe you like your lights to (color-)flash when you get e-mail or the doorbell rings, or maybe (like myself) wanna switch the lights via your smartwatch - with smart-bulbs there are countless possibilities.

Using it as an alarm clock in the morning, it can activate like a natural light source so you wakeup more easily. Then for my TV, they grab the colour of the movies and/or video game an enhance the experience. Then when I have a party, they are pretty nice. Also they can be voice controlled with my Voice Assistant, also pretty need. Also routines are possible, pretty useful. You can set a nicer flair with the right music to it, like romantic dinner with your partner or date. And so on, and so on. There are so many ways to use them.

I'd be interested in an update featuring the GE bulbs, which are supposed to be exclusively for Google Home and don't require a hub. Although if I had to choose, I'd go with Philips - even with the hub. I know a guy with a whole Philips home and the features (plus their supported ton of extra 'Philips Lab' add-on custom features, with more added all the time) makes it a more reliable and solid brand choice. Also, their 'home and away' feature works great, because he works late and doesn't have to call/text his spouse to turn on their front light anymore. It's a tough competitor to beat when you consider all it has going for it - and you don't need to provide a 'mystery' company access to your network. O.o

All I can say to this is GEENI (Merkury Innovations) at Walmart. 60W White (800 lumens) $9.88; 75W Color (1050 lumens) $12.88; Smart Plug $12.88 and you can usually find them for sale. No hub (Wi-Fi), works with all smart devices and Geeni App. I don't understand how people afford to pay $20+ for a bulb. Geeni also has Outdoor Smart Plug ($19.68), Flood Lights white & color ($14.88 to $24.99), Strip Lights ($39.99), Motion Sensor ($24.99), Alarm Siren/Light ($34.99), Doorbell Camera ($79.00), Indoor Cameras ($24.88), Outdoor Cameras ($69.99), Power Strips ($14.88-$29.99), etc.

I got philips hue and is so happy with it since it so easy to setup and i think it's cheap compared to the functions you have and looking on the lifetime on the bulbs then it seems to be great. I had regular bulbs before and i now save power since i can much easily control them compared to regular lighting and where i live the installation is not great at all so having Philips Hue saved my day. I must say that it's probably correct that other manifactures make cheaper bulbs but can you be sure there systems doesn't get too old to exist and then you stand with a lighting system you can't really use. I will still go with Philips Hue compared to the other systems.

So I decided to look into this as I got a new house through huge effort (houses in Ontario are starting to get in price like the Vancouver craziness) and the lights are abysmal.
Now one of these Yee lights on Ali Express is USD$18 and $17 per each for shipping to Canada. So they end up being $35 USD each... so that's $50 CAD for each bulb.. I wanted like 15 of them, which now becomes pretty cost prohibitive.
I might just do bedroom, office and maybe living room now.
P.S. I know for sure that Philips Hue bulbs also have this really cool almost party mode where they change colours and pulse with the music. THAT I saw at a party and It was super cool with a few bulbs set up in the Kitchen and a few strips in their living room!
I'm honestly surprised that they are so expensive. I think ti is just because they can, because you can buy a tiny switching microprocessor with wifi for like 2 bucks. I forget what they're called. You can even get some for 5 bucks or so that will register and store HD video.
Because these guys are making so many bulbs, I'm sure the economies of scale ensure them a pretty healthy profit by now.
Anyway, *sigh*, too expensive for now for me.

Working in the returns warehouse of a major online retailer allows me to see exactly what products get returned the most. Those lower cost ones aren't always the best option in the long run. Sometimes you simply get what you pay for. Personally, I own the Philips Hue system and love it. I paid $99.99 for the starter set, which came with the hub and four bulbs. I tried it in one room first and then decided I enjoyed my purchase. I then bought an expansion pack that had just the four bulbs and paid only $49.99.

    mood lighting
    kitchen pendants x3 Hue colour
lamps around dining and louge area
    hue colour
    2x lamps in bedroom
    hue colour

hue sensors in a few rooms, pantry, landry, loo, bathroom.

alexa setup for all lights (dots, show, spot). soon looking at hue outdoor lights.

lounge and media room also runs logitech elite remotes.nvidia shield in one room with 120" projector. all alexa aware. lights also configured on the remotes.(for the people that come over and dont want to talk).

Nue in wall switches are better functionally than any bulbs. you use lights the same as normal . on then off. when they are off you can still turn on and off with alexa / smart home. smart Bulbs on the other hand you need the switch turned on to use. I'm forever having people come over and turn the lights off on again then off when they leave a room which means smart bulbs doesnt work as the they need to be on.

My personal opinion is yes!! they are absolutely a rip off!

The big thing about Hue is that it's an open standard, you don't need to use any of Phillips' cloud services or internet at all. Because of the physical buttons you can get, and the fact that it doesn't depend on a cloud service, you can set it up like normal lights, but have features like timed lights, lights that turn off when you leave, or on when you arrive, lights that activate at sunset or sunrise, etc.
