I got a tp-link smart light and had connections issues so ended up taking it back. Then got the sengled starter kit which was $49 which included the bridge and 2 globes and it works great, much better than the almost $150 for the phillips starter kit. The sengled it now down to $39 for the starter kit, so this is another cheaper option.

I would actually recomend you also adding Kasa Smart Light Bulb by TP-Link - Reliable WiFi Connection, Multicolor, No Hub Required, Works with Alexa Echo and Google Assistant, California Compliant (KL130) to your review. It cost 30 Dollars right now on amazon. It is cheaper then the phillips Hue has no HUB and is better quality then the YEE light. The app also has energy monitoring and an easy way to select colors. It also works with google home and amazon alexa. I haven't tried with Siri/apple.

I've been using smart light bulbs called Flux for over 3 years. No hub. Less expensive than the Hue and LifX but more expensive than the Yee Light. Has a good iPhone app and works with Alexa, although I only used Alexa for about a week before I decided I didn't want it

I recently came across a talk "smart home - smart hack" from the last 35C3 congress. These bulbs are - just like most IoT devices - a security nightmare. Unencrypted SSID, password saved on the device, usage statistics and geolocations send to the cloud host without any opt-out, just to name a few. Check it out, there's an english translation as well.

I hope Yeelight's quality has gone up. I bought a couple of the Yeelight Blue bulbs for $35 each back in 2014. The power board for one of them failed after maybe 50 hours of use. The actual light and wireless boards still work, so I was able to pull those out, make a new enclosure and power it off a 12v wall wart, but it's very hacky. The other bulb is still going, but showing some of the same signs of failure.

Ive been thinking about it a lot, mulling it over... and ultimately I finally decided to go into the Philips hue thing. Just a couple bulbs to start... and get a few more and a few more every once in a while. once you have the hub, the nice thing is that the bulbs are not so bad. I mean, yeah for a long time... like years... I kept coming back to these things but ultimately not getting them just thinking its kind of dumb, they're just lightbulbs, do I really need this? no.... Its pretty damn extra for sure. But around this time of year the sun comes up pretty damn late where I live and it just sucks waking up in the morning when its still dark out. I mean I've done it a million times but I just hate it. So I got these for the purpose of having them sync up with my alarm app and try to simulate morning light. as for any other lights that I will use in my home down the road.... that'll just be for funzies...
I mean lots of little girls dream about spending a ton of money on a dream wedding, I.... dreamt on spending my money on having a super smart house. BISH I want my house to be like the one in Eurkea... I want to wake up in the morning and believe that I'm about to have some kind of black mirror day. I want to wake up in the morning and believe its fuckin 3019 not 2019. So your fancy shmancy expensive lightbulbs for the lazy people? yes please.

Well, there is one more thing to consider when it comes to light sources, the color rendering index (or CRI for short) is a scale which describes the light sources ability to show the color of the objects it illuminates as close as possible to "natural" light, the reference for this scale being the day light in most cases, or the incandescent bulbs in some (these are rated above 95 in report to day light), a decent light source is considered one that has the CRI above 80 (there is little color fade, or tendency of the colors to appear grey-ish above this point), how ever a very good lighting source is one that has the CRI above 90, this resemble the daylight to such an extent that is very unlikely that you could tell the difference. This only applies to white light sources, since the RGB ones will be emitting colored light, in the RGBW led bulbs such as those in the video, the white should have the CRI provided by the producer, however from the three above, i could only find the CRI on the philips products, which are rated as above 80. I'm an interior designer so I had to look into stuff like these. Best regards.

$720 for lightbulbs? Give me a break! I bought two of the multi colored led china bulbs with remotes for $10. How lazy must one be to need an freaking app to turn on a light? And we are supposed to be conserving electricity, so there is no need to turn them on remotely when gone! The stupid things Americans waste money on today blows my mind!

What's so terrible about having a hub? I actually view it as a pro. Not only does it keep your lights off the internet and independent of external servers, it can also contain custom 'labs' programs to have your lights do cool stuff like mimic tv light or slowely cycle throug light scenes.

  • JC
    JC Před 12 dny

The smart home tech is so tempting, then I think I can just use the light switch that comes with the lamp to turn it on and off. As far as all the neat things I could do with color. I put colored light bulbs in two wall sconces in my living room. I haven't turned them on in 6 months.
So perhaps I'm just fine with regular light.
Love my Alexa to play music though. :o)

  • Radu Cruceru

I bought a Hue starter kit including the hub, 3 white ambiance bulbs, and a dimmer for $100. After a while I bought 2 rgb bulbs and a motion sensor for another $100. I plan on buying some more and I would not trade them for anything else.
    The cool parts:
    - hub is stored in a drawer
    - motion sensor turns on hall lights and then turn off after 5 minutes
    - the rgb lights in the bedroom are white when working, yellow when reading and other colors when doing other stuff
    - they turn off in the evening and on in the morning
    - I can control them remotely (on Android)
    - the dimmer is set above the bed to control them
    The cons:
    - the app is a little lacking (scenes, sensor capabilities etc)
    - sometimes not as bright as I would want them
Overall, the price difference between Hue and others, in my personal opinion, goes into the experience. And that is rarely achieved in a low-cost product. I will admit that there should be an investment made to get that experience, but it's totally worth it. And if you're a little geeky and toy with Home Automation, you're actually get a whole lot more.
For me, this goes into everything else you pay extra for: it just works.
