Microsoft Surface Pro 7 review: USB-C upgrade, battery downgrade

  • The Surface Pro 7 looks so similar to its predecessor you wouldn't be able to tell them apart if not for one welcome addition, a USB-C port. While the port is a welcome addition, nothing else feels revolutionary here. This is still a good portable machine, but with a worse battery life and only mildly improved performance, it's more iteration than upgrade.

2 generations later and all thats significantly different is the addition of the USB-C port.....so sad.

"As if you'd really want to get this tablet without the type cover, anyway."
And that, right there, is my problem with these kinds of tablets. If it's built for productivity, you _need_ the keyboard. And if you need the keyboard, you might as well just get a laptop. Starting at $750 _without_ the cover, you'd be much better off with a laptop, unless you have a particular need to use the tablet portion. And frankly, it looks a little big to use as a tablet.

    • Maverick Hunter K
Maverick Hunter K Před 20 dny

@Brian Hartman Let me correct myself while adding context:
Not all productivity requires writing, so a keyboard is a good and maybe even necessary accessory for people who need to write a lot, sure.

What I really meant was not only the keyboard, but the whole keyboard+mouse(touchpad) paradigm.

That said; I stand by the fact that the iPad is perfectly usable as it is, even if perhaps not 100% comfortable for people who type a lot, compared to something running Windows. I tried going Windows+touch only and it's literally impossible at the moment, the OS just won't allow it.

    • Brian Hartman
Brian Hartman Před 20 dny +1

@Maverick Hunter K I'm not sure I agree with you about the iPad. I've got one, and if I'm doing something productive (i.e., writing), a keyboard is a must. It's the first thing I bought after I got the iPad. The virtual keyboard on the iPad is good, but you're not going to type on it long-term.

The problem isn't so much needing the keyboard as it is needing a $130 keyboard. I bought a $20 Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad, and it's perfectly fine. The only things the Surface Pro keyboard give you are the touchpad and the ability to attach to the case. If you can live without those things, it's fine.

Touchpads on keyboards meant for tablets don't make any sense to me, anyway. It's a touchscreen. You want to move the cursor? Touch the damn screen.

    • Maverick Hunter K
Maverick Hunter K Před 20 dny

Yes. That's what most reviewers don't get about the iPad and what makes it so good.
You do NOT NEED A KEYBOARD. It's made from scratch for you to be able to handle things with the tablet alone, and the keyboard is an optional attachment.

Windows, on the other hand, is not and will never be a touch operating system. You will always need a keyboard.

I like the bezels as they give you something to hold onto when moving it around the desk or using it in tablet mode, and not wanting to deal with touches being annoyingly misregistered, as like what tends to happen when dealing with touchscreens with bezels that are too thin. They could be a bit thinner though I guess, a la the iPad Pro.

  • Khoa Doan

I was told in-store that the USB-C port cannot be used for charging but this nice woman is saying you can. Can someone confirm please?

  • Orbmiser
    Orbmiser Před 20 dny

I like a bit of bezel. How else are you suppose to hold it without fingers covering up screen and content? Most business professionals find a tablet/laptop running android or ChomeOS does not fulfill their real world needs. So no real threat from android or ChromeOS due to students to MBA's needing full desktop apps to get work done. As to having a usb-c charger at home & office. Same goes for me with a Microsoft charger as have two so usb-c in that situation is a mute point. And like most more have usb-a devices than usb-c devices.

As a long time Surface Pro 6 never did 10-13hrs. you stated for normal use. That was advertised video looping test not real world use. All SP6 users have always getting 7-9hrs of battery use depending on load. So your battery statements comparing the 6 to 7 are kind of inaccurate and misleading. Check out any other reviewers to verify about battery life.

Otherwise a nice review covering many pluses of going with a Surface Pro 7.

  • animedudevid
    animedudevid Před 20 dny

How is the design.... not up to date anymore? Everyone is making the same slate. Because it has bezels? Those bezels are important if your drawing on the device. It give you some place to touch with out having to strain the palm rejection too much.

    • Will B
      Will B Před 19 dny

@anzatziI know exactly what I am talking about, practically everyone forgets that USB-C is the connector, not the transmission protocol (for the lack of a better descriptive term)
what I was doing was demonstrating exactly what the USB-C port is capable of, in general, not what it is capable of on the Surface Pro 7. Why MS didn't add TB3 is a mystery as you can put duel TB3 on a tablet as Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet proves.
also, if I'm not mistaken, I may be, that 0-80% fast charging is when it is being charged via the Surface Connect port.

    • anzatzi

Everyone always mentions the fact that the keyboard cover is sold separately and I don’t understand why. The keyboard cover comes in a variety of colors. If Microsoft put it in the box then it would create a HUGE number of SKUs and would become unwieldy. If they kept it as is but included the TypeCover in the price then the Surface would just cost $150 more. Microsoft is a business not a charity. People slam Microsoft for not making radical changes to the Surface design but the benefit is that for nearly 5 generations all the accessories and peripherals are still compatible so if you already bought a TypeCover for a previous Surface then you don’t have to buy a new one if you get a new Surface. Honestly, it’s pretty consumer friendly. A good review should provide context. This ones does not.

Shahhan Spall Před 21 dnem +6

Yes I agree it's not perfect and it's high time Microsoft start to overhall this design. I am not one bit excited for this new surface pro 7. But, this review does not do justice to what the surface pro 7 is, with errors in the information given.
Its neither a tablet (you can not compare it to other tablets, iPad Pro with a keyboard or galaxy tab with a keyboard) and it's neither a laptop/notebook (you can't comopare it to dell xps 13/ hp x360 13"). It is it's on type of product.
I've had the surface pro 4 (Pro 3 before it) for a long time now. For a student, it literelly is able to do everything and anything you want it. And it can be your personal computer all the time not just some times. Granted, some apps do turn on the fan, now after years it does get abit laggy here and there with drawboard (only because I do alot of annotating) + I can hear it struggling with the complete anatomy app, which is a heavy graphics heavy application.
There is no other device this powerful, in such an easy to carry form Factor (not including surface pro x in this as I'm not sure exactly how powerful this new arm based chipset is going to be). If you are looking for portability first, there aren't many products that are better than this.
    A standard home use scenario:
    1) having it wirelessly displayed to a second monitor
    2) watch videos/presentations on the second monitor whilst writing notes on onenote (on the tablet screen itself). And various other ways I've had multiple apps open while im studying, making a presentation etc.
    3) Bluetooth keyboard and mouse attached.
On the go I keep it attached to the keyboard, never had a problem with it. (except battery life sometimes. If I know I'm going to use it past the 8hrs, I take the charger with me).
Final point, the pen features mentioned here are actually office features. They will be comming to all windows devices with an office update. So literelly the only reason to get this is a USB-c port (without thunderbolt) 🙄🤷🏻‍♂️.

It's not a battery downgrade. It would not make any sense. The only thing is that they have carried out a different test this time than on the pro 6. Michael Garry Před 5 dny

@ZuneGuy1118 Thats not even close to being true. In fact: reference required. How are you even measuring that?
I work in games. Its my career and I would not make that claim at all.
You talk of "1 billion" Windows users. Steam, the number one gaming store/platform by a massive margin, have "only" about 70m monthly active users. And that is across 3 platforms, even if Windows is by far the largest of the 3. Windows 10 is on approx 700m devices (2018 figures), which makes the leading gaming platform 10% of the overall Windows 10 user base AT BEST.
Meanwhile Apple have sold over 360m iPads since they were first introduced. How many are used and in what manner is a different question, but they are filling a gap from Windows users.

    • ZuneGuy1118
      ZuneGuy1118 Před 5 dny

@Michael Garry Well actually you're wrong. The largest group of users of PCs is in the gaming market as PC gaming has literally exploded in the past five years. In fact during the desktop PC decline when the iPads were once all the rage and everyone (my wife included) had to have one, the PC Gaming sector was steady, and from there took off and hasn't stopped since. This is due to powerful hardware and top level customization by the customer. Which is another area where the PC has always won against other platforms - options, and customization. Then you have Samsung DEX which Samsung desperately wants people to consider before Windows - completely laughable. Apple still trying to convince that masses that an iPad is a PC replacement. Both platforms still present all the limits that a Windows world doesn't - mainly know x86 compatibility. Microsoft tried to convince us that UWP is the best way to go, but people didn't want it. Now it's floundering. UWP apps is not at all why Surface has grown and become so profitable in such a short time.

    • Michael Garry
      Michael Garry Před 5 dny

@ZuneGuy1118 Hobbyists? I'm talking about actual working, professional people. I hate to break it to you, but by far the biggest group of users of computers only use them for email, office and light browsing. Of those "1 billion" Windows 10 users, MOST FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY. They do have options from other OS's such as ChromeOS, Mac, iPodOS and to say otherwise is ridiculous.
Hell my wife, who works in IT at one of the worlds biggest companies, just bought herself a Macbook Air as that's all she needs to do her job. A screen, a keyboard a "good enough" CPU and a decent trackpad. All her work is remote now anyway, as long as the web browser has the necessary plug-in she could work on any of those devices I listed. That's someone working in development of multi-million dollar projects.
As for the rest of us, who I would put into a more "hardcore" group, I certainly agree MS is losing out by ignoring TB3. I for one simply do not look at non-TB3 devices at all anymore. But I also recognize I am very much in a minority of overall users.

And please don't count cellphones as they can do no heavy lifting in the business world, plus they fail to be anywhere near as versatile, I mean 1 billion Windows 10 users - c'mon. That woman is out of touch with the Windows scene. The only improvements that need to be made are more ports, preferably Thunderbolt. That's where Microsoft has been dragging their feet with regards to the Surface line. Sorry about the kid remark, but I'm 48.

@ZuneGuy1118 Kid? Don't call me kid. I'm probably older than you.

It IS competition to certain users. I don't know how many times I have to say the same thing. It may not be competition for you, I or the majority of users, but there is a category of user whose required apps work on arm, or iOS, or Android, or ChromeOS that let them choose between all those devices. There are a lot of people out there that only use computers for Web,Email and light office work. For those users, any of those devices ARE competition.
