the thing to member is there was a treaty signed by all the leaders of the world at the time , no battleships over a certain tonnage and England and America Kept to the treaty (they all signed )Japan hid this battleships construction , there by violating the treaty they signed on to , now Hitler built the Bismarck at the same time and he simply lied to the tonnage when asked and had supporting docs to boot , I don't know which one was worse , I do know this ship was built under dishonorable conditions , for such a honorable people is seems ironic ,it was a beautiful ship I cannot deny, what also left out was , it had to draw so close to the island it to reign fire on it , so it was more of less stuck as a stationary target , it is said they pounded that ship for 8 hours and smoke poured in the horizon , before it finally sank , so even as a unmoving target it still withstood a incredible beating before finally giving up to the ocean its life .

Impressive. However; f**k the imperial Japanese navy & the Yamato Class Battleships. All i want to know is, can the American military/Navy/Nato learn from this/assimilate this/incorporate these concepts (if practical) into our arsenal or not ??? Otherwise, anything else don't mean s**t.

Thanks for the upload, but if it was so obsolete, then why did the USA make sure it was blown out of the water ? The same with bismarck and tirpitz ? If planes were the answer to future battles ,then all the main batterships would have made a huge difference,as they can take out the aircraft carriers from 26 miles away and it could handle the torpedos and planes with so much what, .50 cal or even just .30 cal machine guns, which is like shooting a air rifles slug at 3mm steel ?

    • Erectar Denara
      Erectar Denara Před měsícem

First of all, because of the psychological impact : more than massive ships, they were symbols. By taking them out you can severely damage the will to fight of your opponent.
And secondly...because the allied feared them. Yes, they were kinda obsolete due to the increasing place of the aviation in modern warfare... But the only time the Yamato came into range of US ships, it cut a US carrier in two with 1 round of it's main canons.
They weren't efficient against aircraft, but if they managed to get in range of your ships they'd simply delete them instantly, that's why they were priority targets (besides, their massive size made them easier to hit).

As for their durability against planes : a carrier can launch it's aircraft from farther than 26 miles (much farther), so a carrier rarely see direct combat at all in all it's career. And yes, these battleships had defenses against aircraft, but their massive size played against them, making them easy targets for deck bombing and torpedoes.
The Yamato, in his final battle, with his small fleet faced 400 US planes, and they shot down more than a 100 of them (if I remember correctly), but the thing is : 100 planes are cheaper and faster to produce than 1 yamato-class battleship, so the matchup wasn't good at all.
