As awesome as the ships are, they might have been massive paperweights for all the good they did
Counting on a decisive battle was such a mistake when we were island hopping
And just like they vastly underestimated tank warfare and fell behind, using their 1930s tanks, it shouldn't have taken til midway to realize carriers would be way more useful

still a ridiculous amount of firepower dished out by these insanely huge seamonsters and still a MASSIVE amount of planes required to sink them
to think nearly 500 aircrafts was barely enough to sink even one of those is unreal
then again, when you look at the Bismarck it makes perfect sense that a ship such as this would require so many torpedoes and bombs to sink

If BBs were really useless then show me american BB sunk from the aircraft. There is none.
The worst damage in the battle was from other BB - Kirishima that nearly sunk USS South Dakota, a relative new Battleship. First japanese BB was sunk by...USS Washington.
Overall: If Japanese warships develop sufficient AA, sunking them by aircraft would be hard if not impossible, and NEVER BBs!
BTW - first carrier was sunk by BB gunsXD

To add insult to injury, the converted carrier, Shinano, was sunk only ten days after it was commissioned and before it ever saw any real combat. A US submarine, USS Archerfish, snuck past her destroyer escort and four torpedoes were enough to capsize and sink the vessel; making it the largest ship ever sunk by a submarine.

4:20-5:17 No wonder Japan lost the war. The ran out of resources continually attempting to upgrade a city-sized boat.
8:06-8:14 The vid here, although not mentioned in the narration, is historically accurate. The ship rolled over, capsized and sunk and the tremendous weight of the ship mentioned earlier in the video tore the deck guns off when the ship inverted and also split the ship in half. You can find pictures online of the sunken remains of the ship, still split in half and the deck guns quite a ways away from where the ship came to rest on the ocean floor.

The Yamato biggest battleship in history and the most poorly used battleship in history, the Japanese were so afraid of getting it damaged that refused time and again to throw its impressive firepower into a battle where it might have actually made a difference!! Just goes to show you you can have the greatest weapon ever but if you can't or won't use it it's worthless!!! :)

    • Kevin Lee
Kevin Lee Před 21 dnem +1

All the ships in WW2 ran on steam. It was the most reliable and had the least amount of parts to replace in an emergency. Today's ships are essentially either diesel or nuclear-steam. If the tech works there's no real reason to not use it.
