I remember back in 2003 when I was still a clueless child randomly switching tv channels out of boredom and came upon Roger Federer playing a match... that was when I fell in love with tennis and from then on, Roger was always no. 1 in tennis for me, whether he won the Grand Slams or not. It's sad to see him retire, but he's had a good run and will always be a legendary tennis player to all children who grew up watching him play

He's has to be considered as potentially the greatest sportsman of all time. The length of his career, his level of success, the way he revolutionised tennis, the way he's never put a foot wrong and been such an incredible role model. I was 9 when I first saw him play and I'm now 30 ❤️

Rafa bawling his eyes out was heartbreaking. Rafa just realized exactly that his half of a life is completely gone. Roger's presence in his life (first as a fiercest rival, later also become the best of friend) become so routine it feels natural to have him around. I think it's just struck Rafa at that moment, that he now for sure won't feel that "natural presence" again. It's always easier for Rafa not knowing when Roger will be back on tour, like for the past 2 years. Now Rafa has confirmation that Roger won't be back ever again.

For about two decades when you see a guy never show any awkward emotion or even a grimace when he lost due to injuries, to see that man today cry in front of the fans and really lay it out there is amazing. I sometimes misunderstood you , you are the greatest sporting personality of my generation and no one has worn their heart on their sleeve like you have in your farewell match speech. That will also be a record that would remain unbeaten.

@ Abhishek Taparia I can’t believe it’s over. There have been many greats over the years however Roger (and Rafa) represent the best the game has to offer. This as you said, is truly the end of the Golden Era. My biggest regret is that I took these guys for granted, thinking they would always be around and now it’s over. And now I’m here futilely wishing I could just relive the last 20 years to watch the greatest rivalry in the history of sports and the two greatest champions in the history of the game.

Of course football fans will argue Messi and Ronaldo, Boxing, Ali or joe Frazier, some Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. But Federer just embodies some form of class and excellence, passion, respect that others have but not in such quantities. I have seen many interviews where the guest has been emotional and cried. I have often wondered why someone won’t give the person a Kleenex. Surely somebody, perhaps the host, someone backstage or in the audience has a facial tissue. It doesn’t have to be brand name, they could even use a napkin ( a clean one of course). I know it’s not a big deal, but I always say to myself, “ Could somebody please get this person some tissue?”
