That's nice but how do you dispose of a drive, with a drill? I think it's better to subscribe to a cloud backup service like iDrive. iDrive will backup your entire system. If your data is top secret to you then what about using an inexpensive time machine like solution?

I have issues that the first hard drive I have seems not being detected by my system and sometimes while I am doing something the computer crash. I bought a new one and after a month same issue happen. I am still using the new drive until now it works sometimes if I re-plug the hard disk. I dont know what to do. I need some advice please.

Back in the dark ages I was using MacWrite which saved a new copy of the file every time you saved it. The address of the old file was erased but the data remained on the drive. I had saved the file a dozen or more times when I decided to delete it. I then copied dozens of fonts to the drive. Then I decided that file was very important and I wanted to recover it. The recovery software of that time reported that the file was overwritten and so were most of the copies. So, here’s where the consultant comes in. At that time sectors were huge and often mostly empty space containing old data plus the new files data. Using a disk editor I was able to find pieces of the deleted file inside the newly installed fonts and elsewhere and copied and pasted the data not overwritten. The software of that era didn’t extract the data not actually being used by the file as I did to rebuild a file (I did know what I was looking for which software would not). This was different than the recovery of a failed drive described here.
Of course only a fool doesn’t backup his drive and relies only on the one drive. Which eliminates these recovery needs if you backup often enough.

About 14 years ago I had a hard drive failure on my boot drive. Not a problem, I just went to my local shop and bought a re-furbished drive. I got home and installed it, and turned on the computer to format and install the OS. I screwed up in NOT disconnecting my data drive before powering up. I looked at the drives and selected what I KNEW to be the drive to be formatted and ended up formatting my data instead. I caught it before doing the OS install. I then disconnected the data drive and formatted the new drive and did the OS install and after re-connecting the data drive, confirmed what I already knew: the drive was blanked. So I do a quick run to the shop and ask them if they can do anything. I can't recall what happened, but they couldn't help me. So I go home and boot up and start GOOGLING. Eventually, I found R-DATA. I selected the right software for my drive type and file-format, then downloaded an installed it. I hooked the drive back up and was able to rescue my data. I'm sure their program has been refined to the nth degree since then. I've never needed it since, but when people tell me they have accidentally formatted a drive, I tell them about R-DATA. Nice to know I'm not the only one who knows about this company, Linus.

I backed up my data on a SeaGate expansion portable drive 1Tb and a month later the computer died. The new computer can’t see the old HDD at all and I plugged in the SeaGate portable drive and it makes the USB recognition sound and that’s all. It doesn’t see the portable drive or the original HDD. The USB drive won’t work in any computer now either. I dont know what’s wrong with it. I feel like it’s something on the drive if the backup won’t load either. The backup was plugged in when the computer died so maybe a virus? Any suggestions would help!

Not gonna explain how much of an idiot I was that lead it to happen, but I can happily confirm that buying the exact same model ("buy again") from my amazon order history allowed me to swap the circuit board (4 screws, torx head), and presto! I lost interest when the software updates from a DB back at their corporate servers - That data should be included with the purchase and updated periodically. What's sent back to the corp servers is not mentioned - would have to scrutinize the privacy policy before I pulled the trigger. Meanwhile, I'll continue to practice safe data storage principals so there won't be a need. Thanks for the video!

As usual, great information, delivered clearly, and covers what needs to be covered.
In the middle of reorganizing fifteen years of photography, the two month old drive I had transferred everything to (yeah, I shouldn't have deleted the stuff on the other drives before finishing the job...D'oh!) had the controller board go up in smoke. I don't have money to spare having someone else recover my stuff, and at the time it happened, it didn't cross my mind that there was a cheap way of at least attempting to recover it on my here I am, two years later, finally doing what I could/should have done immediately--searching for possible solutions. If what I've learned here doesn't solve my problem, I may as well just pitch the damned thing, since I'll never have the money for professional help.
At least I have a fighting chance!, where did I put those soldering irons?

I have Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive that I got some time ago, probably 8 years ago, anyway, it failed 2 months after the warrantee was up. I was stupid & took the thing apart. I was trying to be careful but I'm sure I got some dust in it. Anyway, I found where there was an actual metal sliver or some other fragment that had landed on the drive platter before the platinum layer was applied! I looked at it under magnification and sure enough, you could see that fragment sealed under shiny stuff. WTF was going on in their production center to allow this to happen?
From what I understand it was part of a long series of Seagate drives that failed. It seemed to me that it operated fine until it got to about 67% capacity then, Instantly, i heard noises and got a message that it was failing. I unplugged it but plugged in back in 2 or 3 times to get some data and that's all it took before it was non responsive.
It would be nice to recover that data but it's not vital.

One of my favorite data recovery utilities is ddrescue for Linux. Assuming you just have bad sectors, you can make a bit for bit copy of your drive and when bad sectors are encountered, they are added to a log and skipped for the time being. After the program has reached the end of the drive, it goes back and tries the failed sectors again, pruning the log as it gets good reads. You can have it repeat this process ad infinitum, of quit after a number of passes.
