Why were tanks cemented into the ground in WWII? Seems an odd thing to do until you find out why..

You may also want to note as the Americans advanced further into France they started having bulldozers that would break up the hedgerows utilized in a another role--that of digging out emplacements for tanks to Coast into and fire on the Germans.
I'll be cutting into the side of a hill so that the front of the Hill would work as a natural wall to protect the tank that would just belly up to the edge of it with nothing but the cannon and the top of the turret showing.
Mobile, quickly put into execution, easy to move away and out.

when i read the title, i was like "oh, well its probably because since the tanks were so heavy, and with constant rainfall, seasonal change, the ground underneath them would just let the heavy vehicles sink into the soft dirt and wet mud"

Were there undergournd tunnels connecting these? If part of a larger system of fortification I'd think that would be a good idea. Even if on it's own, might provide an opportunity to escape to a hidden exit if the armor and weapons are damaged and area over run by enemies.

Didn't Iraq bury their tanks in the sand to defend their base against the Americans during the gulf war? I think the Americans ended up just driving around them and they couldn't do anything about it since they had buried themselves.
