The Modular Mac Pro Concept

  • čas přidán 22. 03. 2019
  • Apple's 2019 Mac Pro is going to be a modular system. I think it's gonna be lit.
    The "Modules" in this vid:
With high core count Xeon CPUs, ECC Ram and AMD GPUs. This will be the most powerful computer Apple has made.

Would you rather see a stackable system like this? or something more traditional that let's you go fully custom?

      With the pros en cons in the video I think I would prefer a traditional system with easy replacable parts, for example;

It just seems like a cleaner design for one thing. The mesh grill and "chrome" on the new Mac Pro just don't seem like the usual Jon Ive understatedness to me. Not that it matters - it's way out of my price range anyway, even the monitor.

I would prefer a tower ..... a tried and true system where we could change stuff ourselves. I love the Mac OS much more than Windows but I’m afraid Apple have lost their way. They’ve become a bunch of Nancy boys with no idea what computers are supposed to do - other than video editing.

That's cool. I am waiting for Apple's Modular Mac Pro for me to build a supercomputer at home. I want to be more productive to make 8K 3D models & 8K videos & 8k video games. 8K is the future for high-end users.

There's a rumor that Modular Mac Pro will have thunderbolt 4.0 (80Gbps) and USB 4.0 (40 Gbps) so that they can be compatible with HDMI 2.1(48Gbps) for resolutions up to 10K and frame rates up to 120fps.

A computer concept targeted at high income families with little or no technical knowledge. Another symbol of wealth to show off to their friends, this is what Apple has become very good at throughout the years.

Apple reached their peak in 2011 went downhill after that. Apple hardware sucks only positive side is Mac OS X is better than Windows 10 how ever Linux is catching up to Mac OS X

  • Ethan L
    Ethan L Před 4 měsíci

Modules would be fine if they were user upgradeable. Bare modules you can put your own stuff in would be great, you could get a storage module and put your own drives in it, a pcie module to put your own periferals into. Even if you had to stick to a short list of Apple compatible components it would be better than buying soldered in components you have to throw away when it stops working. Can you imagine if Apple's policy about data recovery for all their other products was applied to a Mac Pro like this because they soldered everything in? No professional would stand for that.

Interesting concept, but I hope Apple doesn't go this route! If Apple weren't SO obsessed with making things SO small they could make a really affordable and versatile Mac Pro. WE want pic-e slots, thunderbolt, usb 3.1 in our Mac Pro's. If Apple were to just improve on the "Cheese Grater," then I'd be thrilled. In 2013, Apple tried to reinvent the Mac Pro. Some pros are are happy with them, but it takes a couple of thunderbolt expansion chassis to make the 2013 useable for me in pro audio. Thanks.

  • SevenDeMagnus
    SevenDeMagnus Před 4 měsíci

Yikes. Those propriety modular upgrades will be expensive and we'll be at the mercy of Apple when it comes to the latest and greatest GPU, especially. Unless it's as affordable as off the shelf PCs.

Up Today, i don’t undertstand what People Want. The Mac Never was Fully Custom. A Time ago it was more, yes. But there it was made with 3;5 Hdds.
    This is Today unrealistic.
    So what is possible?
RAM? Yes. But it was already and Perfect made at Mac Pro.
Nvme ssd? Yes? But it was already and Perfect made at Mac Pro...Apple did Not sell further Kits.
Graphics? So. They nearly Never do that. But Saphire and NVIDIA had Every one in their ok????graphic Cards Upgrades Are missing
CPUs? Apple, Never give you that. And like Every Mac you could do this in the last Mac Pro, if you Want to. Never...
sata Port? Yes. This is missing Since the last one. But Apple perhaps Sees this as past Technology. I do Not. Up to 4tb for Data ssd and Up to more with Hdds.
    So what is missing?
Opportunity to Change graphics, But i guess it is Not very much, what will Happen there.
    Sata Port.
I just Want to say. It will be a Wonderful thing, i guess. But it is unrealistic to think you will geht pc modularity. There is more just a change at graphics and perhaps further ssds possible,
The last one was very modular. Never See a System so easy change ram and Flash. They just had to make it Bigger for real graphics and with ssds

I will be so annoyed if they make it like this. Unnecessarily expensive... traditional system is what everyone wants! Why over-engineer it, unless to be a greedy cash cow, which is what Apple is trending towards since TC took over.

  • Marco Pfeiffer

I really like the concept. But what modules would you use? GPU, Storage, maybe networking. But the core components are the interesting ones and I don't see a ram, cpu, wlan, bluetooth module. But we''ll see.

Starting to think Mac has completely lost the high end graphics market. Feeling a little deflated over the Mac recently :-(

    THK-DWR Před 5 měsíci

How much more expensive can they go? I have the latest Mac Pro, but I fear I won't be able to do a new one if the prices are going to be as ape as they have been of late. I like the idea of modular. The single biggest issue I have with the Mac Pro is the fact that the Thunderbolt 2 was so incredibly short lived. I have five ports just gathering dust because there so few that support it and the few that do are crazy expensive. There is no simple split from thunderbolt 2 to USB3. If they screw this up, I'm leaving the ecosystem. Getting rid of anything apple.

The advantage this could have is a $1000 Mac mini type base device with each module capable of adding just one thing a user might want (base model has basic possibly Apple only processor if they really go the Arm Mac route), and a couple ports and basic ram. One module has 64 Gb ram, others probably have at least 1 TB SSDs, another with high end GPU and possibly choices on intel graphics. One with full IO (10 GB ethernet, Another 2 to 4 Thunderbolt ports on top of base ones, and all the other current iO. It would also be cool if there was an exclusive module like an iPhone Dock, or RGB desk lamp.

Component-based over modular, definitely. Professionals don't care very much what a system looks like, they just want it to work well. This means fast and upgradable. The old tower design was fine. Just go back to that and stop trying to solve nonexistent problems. Next thing I expect them to do is to spend several trillion re-engineering the ballpoint pen.
