  • Dave2D review of the 2019 Dell XPS 15 7590 with an OLED. The i9-9980HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.
    XPS 15 - amzn.to/2OH60QJ
The new OLED 4k display panel is VERY bright and colorful. Awesome for content creation. Overwatch and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1650. The 2019 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop holds it back

XPS 15 one of the game changers of the industry. It's on it's last legs now but it's still REALLY good for some users. Would you use this?

I bought a Dell XPS 15 in March 2019. It is sits in a box in my basement. SD card reader hardware never worked. Return for repair fixed the card reader but came back with failed fingerprint reader and a cooling fan that stays on high speed only. 40 hours working with Dell tech support wanted my time and my $1600. Do not buy.

@dave lee and fellow youtubers, I am looking for a matte/non-glossy or glare screen laptop. Seems like all laptops the past few years have been made with glossy screens. Please direct me towards a light weight (aka less than 4 lbs; most probably non-gaming laptops) with matte a screen. (:

what would you recommend for 6 and light 8k video editing? MSI, ASUS, Dell?

    • Estadr Adaber
      Estadr Adaber Před 6 hodinami

Stephen Eastwood well it depends on what specs the laptop has but for 8k footage you need a lot of power. MSI and ASUS are good options for laptops and Dell although looks good on paper the build quality doesnt impress me and usually has a short life. If you want a thin laptop with less performance MSI is very good at it but if you want a lot of power ASUS has very thick machines that have lots of power but I recommend using a desktop to edit 6 and 8k video editing for the best performance

You know some of you reviewers need to better define exactly what you mean by "gaming Laptops" and please try to be consistent. Some of your reviews of gaming laptops actually sound like they are not gaming laptops according to the standards you apply to this machine and others, including the thermal issues which can of course occur even without gaming on the so called non gaming machines. I have never had a so called " gaming machine" but have played some games at acceptable frame rates without overheating nevertheless. If you are someone who plays games obsessively, which I think is probably an obsessive personality and then yes, maybe you need a so called gaming laptop, if you can find one without thermal issues and you are only satisfied with the highest frame rates. For most of us that is not the case. So for some of us yes the XPS 15, or even lesser equipped machines are fine for the casual gamer and the not so casual gamer in some instances, but just not for the overly obsessive gamer who spends most of their waking hours gaming, which to me is bordering on a serious neurosis. Hopefully that is not the case for most of us who are a little more stable emotionally. I could say my Dell precision 3800 is a gaming laptop to the extent that I can play most games I like at a acceptable frame rate without any thermal problems. Do you get what I mean. So again you need to elaborate further and provide greater clarity on what you mean when you say a "gaming Laptop:. You and other reviewers as well. That said, I generally enjoy your reviews and I think overall you do a good job.

    Hey Dave,
    I have the option between an XPS 15 (I7 9750H, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 60hz FHD IPS)
    or Razer Blade 15 2018 (I7 8750H, GTX 1060 MAX Q, 16GB RAM, 144hz)
Main use will be digital art/moderate 3D work in blender/maya with light/moderate gaming on the side.
Which will I be better off getting? The XPS is £1499 and the Blade £1600-ish.

I feel like your whole review was based off of playing games. Most people that are in the market for an XPS 15 are looking for a powerhouse portable workstation. There are plenty of cheaper options for "gaming laptops" which this is not so your review was kind of irrelevant. You should've focused on what and who it was designed for

Here's what I've been going through with DELL...

I bought a XPS 9560 but it had video software glitches which Dell couldn't fix remotely (Pro Support), multiple times. They offered a replacement but that would've meant no laptop for Uni which was not an option. So, I had to make a second purchase. The second one finally arrived and it was USED, with a DIRTY palmrest, USED CORD, and a BENT SCREEN (it bowed in the middle). Someone had clearly used and abused it and I couldn't believe that Dell would send me something like this as a whole separate purchase. Of course, they denied that they send used laptops and then I had to prove they did, so I sent photos, etc, and waited for THEIR decision. By now I'm over five grand out of pocket and still using the first faulty laptop. They offer a replacement for the second purchase and guess what, it has the same software glitches as the first and again (!!) a bowed screen. AGAIN, I had to prove it with pics and multiple emails. I was so disgusted! In the end I got a full refund but the whole process was pathetic. I spoke to so many people until I was offered a refund.

CUT TO: Last December. A few months had passed and the bad taste had worn off a bit. So, I decided to buy a XPS 9570 and give those blowhards another chance (because I love the look and feel of the XPS - if only they could send me one that worked!). Well, all was fine until three months later when the speakers malfunctioned (I was getting a tinny/ broken type sound). Several remote sessions later, I had new issues, malfunctioning fingerprint sensor, video software glitches AGAIN (this time a pale brown pixelated split screen effect as opposed to the random red and green pixels the previous time), and some other problems. After many more remote sessions than last year, they refused to offer a replacement, citing the next one would "probably have a problem". LOL! In other words, they were blaming me for the issues their laptops had. The previous incident had already been stressing me out which made Uni all the more stressful and yet again the same thing was happening. They were convinced the speaker failure was software related but every attempt to fix it (by them) was a BIG FAIL. It took months until they offered a refund but NO REPLACEMENT, which is probably for the best! By this stage I had spoken to at least thirty people and had to wait weeks for them to offer a fair outcome, which was an unnecessary fight on my behalf since they were refusing to take responsibility. Oh, by the way, they offered to replace the speakers in house, with refurbished speakers. YEAH, that's what I paid thousands for. This whole saga has been affecting my studies because as any of you know, who are doing a major degree, studies are stressful enough. It's amazing I have a H2 average but I've had to take leave because of all the stress.

If I counted every email and phone call, I would say there were between one and two hundred interactions all up. Also, I was called by an individual who said she would be my last port of call. But nope, I spoke to at least ten people after her. What a joke.

Dell's customer service is truly a disgrace (apart from the kind reps I spoke to, who did try to help), but the unseen higher employees calling the shots really make me want to PUKE!

Every word I've stated is 100% TRUTH. Ignore anyone who tries to challenge what I've said since they are either lucky recipients of working units or Dell employees. I won't be responding to anyone, I just wanted to let people know what I've experienced, so if you're looking for an argument, go fish. It's such a shame because I actually still only prefer the XPS. The look and feel of it is so great. But my experiences have been shockingly awful.

Good short review. I don't play games at all but 4k video editing mainly on davinci resolve and filmora9. I had pulled trigger yesterday on the 9750h fhd base model for $1100 final price after some discounts and cash backs since it was very tempting after selling my mid 2014 macbook prod 13inch. Ofcourse I will put 16gb memory on it. I hope I will like it, from what you just mentioned. Will I need repasting for 4k video editing alone? Or should this be just fine out of the box after BIOS updtae which they claim fixed the thermal throttling.
I intend to plug this into my lg 4k monitor when I am at home. That was one of the reasons I didn't bother about the 4k variant.
HP Spectre X360 15t looks good for the price ($1400 for a 4k lcd 16gb 256gb ssd) , but you cannot open the back so not upgradeable at all

A little memory stick flash drive in the other one and your maxed out. No room for an ilok, no room for a chord to go to a box to record music from. No cool acting real fast shove a printer cable in and print. Just one usb port free. hmm. Why do people buy laptops? I have to consider getting a desktop now are you kidding me?? My old laptop had 4 usb ports and a blue ray player. A battery that set it up so it could cool and you can buy and replace or slide in and out if you got bsod.
