-----------------------------------------
The Tournament of Champions is the second major of the 2023 Guaranteed Rate PBA Tour. And for the second time this season, EJ Tackett earned the No. 1 seed.
At the historic AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio, Tackett led the TOC wire-to-wire. He averaged more than 225 for 48 games on the 40-foot Don Johnson oil pattern.
The Indiana native makes his fourth title match of the young season, owning a 3-0 record thus far. Tackett’s win at the U.S. Open served as a major catalyst for his incredible start to the season.
“Knowing that I got up and threw the shot when I needed to, and things worked out, that gives you a lot of confidence going forward,” Tackett said. “I think that’s shown itself each time that I’ve been in the same position.
“Confidence goes a long way, man,” he continued. “We see it in sports all the time. It’s clear the people that have the confidence in themselves and what they’re doing. (Anthony Simonsen) is one that’s never, ever wavered from that.”
Simonsen, who secured the No. 2 seed, sits one game away from a rematch. He lost to Tackett one week ago at the PBA Jackson Classic.
Tackett and Simonsen will be joined by Matt Ogle and Jason Sterner - who surged from seventh to fourth in the position round - in Sunday’s championship round.
The fifth competitor in the championship round will be the advancer from Rounds 1-3 of the 17-player stepladder finals.
Kyle Troup, Jason Belmonte, Andrew Anderson and Marshall Kent secured the fifth through eighth seeds.
Troup made a massive leap in the final round of match play. He won his first five matches while averaging 248 to climb from 12th to third. He slipped to fourth prior to the position round, where Sterner surpassed him by 10 pins.
Belmonte sat in 51st place after the second round of qualifying before firing a massive 1,446 series to sneak inside the match play cut. After another slow start, the 14-time major champion won 13 of his final 14 matches to climb from 22nd to sixth.
The ninth through 12th seeds - Jake Peters, Stu Williams, Chris Via and Tom Smallwood - earned one day off for their efforts. They will bowl on Saturday night, awaiting the advancer of Friday’s show.
Last year’s No. 1 seed and 2020 TOC champion Kris Prather headlines the stepladder’s opening round. Wes Malott, Tim Gruendler, François Lavoie and Packy Hanrahan round out the field for the 17-player finals.
Lavoie sat outside of the cut heading into the position round, also against Hanrahan. After shooting 164, 187 and 183 in the three previous games, the former TOC champion came into the final game on a sour note.
“I was pretty upset,” Lavoie said. “I just couldn’t find any good ball motion. It was unraveling.”
For the position round, the fellow Shockers moved to Lanes 1-2, which Lavoie said hooked less than the other pairs. He changed up his strategy during the three minutes of practice, a move that paid immediate dividends.
Lavoie fired the front-nine and 279 to circumvent Hanrahan.
Despite the 182 on his scoresheet, Hanrahan felt he did all he could aside from a missed 7-pin. The two-handed southpaw managed to stave off Dick Allen for the final spot by seven pins.
“I missed the pocket on the first shot of the game,” Hanrahan said. “The rest of them slammed the pocket and ended up with like three strikes. I gave ‘em what I think is all I had. That’s all you can really do.”
Hanrahan said he feels like the luckiest person in the world, in part because he did not think 182 would be enough to stay inside the cut - but also because he missed the cut at the pre-tournament qualifier.
“I am literally not supposed to be here,” said Hanrahan, who got a spot in the main field as the first alternate after a late withdrawal.
And yet, Hanrahan will kick off the 17-player stepladder finals on Friday night against Lavoie, who looks to replicate his 2021 performance.
“When I won the TOC, I did run the ladder,” Lavoie said with a grin. “It’s a bit of a tougher task ahead of me, but I have done it before… with five people.”

Hi everyone! It would be greatly appreciated if you would consider supporting my channel here! www.buymeacoffee.com/bowlingplanet
I'll be honest I love the idea that we get to have 17 bowlers on television in 3 days to performing qualification to make things more challenging for them to make it to the finals so I actually love this format so we can have more players to be on television instead of 5 or even 4 so this is a good idea
Yeah I would never complain if they wanted to at least do this with majors.
I think it's actually a really good idea for majors.
Kris Prather with a wrist injury still has a better physical game than 99% of us when we’re at our absolute best 😂
I always thought of kris as a robot when comes to bowling. Then I saw him on the house bowling CHclip channel. Realized he is completely different very funny and entertaining made me a fan.
Man I can only imagine what Wes is going through. Idk if he will make it all the way, but I would definitely love to be proven wrong. We’re rooting for ya Big Nasty. 🙏
I just want to add, while I am sad to see Bosoares no longer planning to upload any PBA videos, I'm happy to see you carrying the torch BP. You and Bosoares have been absolute lifesavers as I live in Australia and don't have access to Fox, so for that, I shall give you both my greatest thanks in the best way I know how...
☕#coffeeforbp ☕ #coffeeforbosoares
🤓
Wes's throw may not be as smooth as Francois or as accurate as Kris but he is a beast at technicality and is able to read the lane well. Making appropriate adjustment and getting himself in good position. Hope to see more of the big nasty in the rest of the tournament.
So close Packy. Packy just needs to realize he belongs in the top tier of bowling he’s got all the talent.
Pack is one of those players who somehow fails on the big stage. When he wins a PBA title it will be extra special for him.
@Kurt Wetzel I think once he gets his first the flood gates will open. He’s a great guy great for the sport. You could tell even the announcers believe he belongs week in week out at the top of the game.
@Kurt Wetzel This aged well
Dang you were right
@bunker I told Packy he was going to win next week and that was week before TOC so I was one week off. Seriously couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. He is doing so much to promote the game of bowling and he’s great for the sport. I don’t bowl yet I follow it now because of packy’s channel.
I think this format is extremely good. Normally if you finished 13-17 get your check and beat buddy. At least you still have a shot at 1st from 17th with this format. In addition, we as fans get to watch more bowling!!!!
I feel for Wes. He looks miserable. Rooting for him though. Would be an amazing story if he pulled this thing out.
1:28:10 I think Stone absolutely nailed it here. You hear players all over the tour commending Prather for having one of the best physical games (if not THE best) out there, but his mental game is so quick to crumble, leading him to rush his shots. I’ve seen it on several telecasts at this point and it breaks my heart, because his potential is enormous. I really hope he figures out a better way to manage the mental game as his career progresses. If he does, he’ll be an absolute monster.
Kris didnt have any semblance of a look on the right lane and he couldn’t double. Its nearly impossible to win a PBA match with 3 strikes through 8 frames while the other guy is striking on both lanes.
Huh? Mental game is something but if you can't find it in one game you're done. Have you ever bowled in league or bowled in a tournament? Most of the time it's difficult to hit in one game. If you have the wrong ball or wrong line it will absolutely wreck your game. Especially if youre bowling against someone thats been bowling on that pair already. Since 2 or 3 frames of bad shots on one lane leads to a 190
Love seeing Norm on the show. Great way to have the TOC
I bowl with Packy and Francois from time to time at Wichita State at the union's 8-lane bowling alley. They're nice people and they've helped my game, too.
Love this format get to see more players on TV and stakes get higher each round. Great stuff. TNJR
Wes getting emotional on the telecast. Such a great bowler and a fantastic guy. Was wondering why he was withdrawing from tournaments
I’ve been into bowling on and off since I was a kid. I mostly play pool, but here lately I’ve really been into bowling again. I have a Black Widow Ghost, Proton Physix, Blue Hammer, and a V2 Sweet which have all been gifted to me, I feel like I’d just be doing a disservice to not bowl now haha I enjoy watching the pros and Wes/Prather are 2 of my favorites. Excited to be back in the sport!
I am so impressed by Wes Malot today. What a grind.
Thanks for putting this up so quick now im caught up for tonight! So nice to see the big nasty back, hes the only guy i will always root for when hes on tv
Just was watching the Fox highlights at the same time this video was uploaded; perfect timing!!
Exceptional video Bowling Planet and hope you're having a good 2023 so far! 📌
Thx so much for the 📌 BP! :)
Edit: Nvm but it was good while it lasted!
1:06:08 Randy's aversion to the 8-pin is always hiarious
I’m happy Wes is moving on. I’m rooting for him big time.
I really like Tim Gruendler's game, so smooth 👌
I don't agree with the Kris Prather comparison though, I think it's even better in my opinion.
Sucks about Wes' back injury though. Was quite an emotional speech from him going in, great to see him back on TV. Let's go Wes!! ✊
EJ is too good he's at the number one seed already like I know he was going to be in television but I didn't know he was going to be number one
This was awesome. Thanks @bowlingplanet. Will you posting Saturdays 4 hour coverage?
Way to go Wes. Glad to see you back.
So happy to see Norm in the booth 😁🎳
Please tell me Norm will be in the booth more regularly from now on!!!
This kind of match is good to promote the sport and build fan base for players.
Loved seeing a lot of the familiar bowlers I watch on other yt channels!
A million thanks for posting this!
I agree that the Pba needs to find some new commentators but of course keep Norm because Rob and Randy say a lot of random stuff and don’t really talk about things that give people who don’t know about bowling any knowledge. They need to do like the NBA and NFL by finding some young commentators who know about bowling and know what to talk about. Chris Barnes, Belmo, my guy Tommy Jones or even some guys who are retired.
Thank you! Finally, somebody who thinks like I do! I've been tired of R&R for a number of years, and I'll save all the why's. Everyone else you mentioned here, I would be 100% on board with. Chris Barnes, absolutely. Norm can offer some pretty decent commentary and insight. I would also throw Rhino Page in the mix, he provided some awesome perspective on his win at the _Kenn-Feld Group Classic_ in Coldwater back in 2017. I have no doubt he could easily apply that as a possible PBA commentator in the future.
@Guitarzan yes I definitely agree. Even guys like Mika, Josh Blanchard, Robert Smith, Patrick Allen and so on.
But we have to be hip. It's 2023 right? Bring back Bo and Chris Schenkel.....well......you know what I mean
@The New 80's Revolution Bo is still here & a hall of fame great, he needs to jump back into the commentary booth & don’t forget about Marshall Holman, nobody didn’t mention Mike Durbin as the play by play. Remember, Marshall won back in 1976 & 1986.
What a treat norm is there ❤
Love seeing norm on the mic
I had fun with Rob dropping the casual wrestling reference and Randy not getting it. XD
Thanks for the upload!❤️
25:49 Bella Love Castillo on the right…any top notch collegiate bowling program would be lucky to have her on their team.
once she grows up and stops complaining about 7 year old's not having lane courtesy
Start off the video with 00:42 #BellaLoveCastillo she is a upcoming 13 year old bowler with a lot of energy!
Thanks for posting so quickly. Much appreciated 😎
Thank you for posting this. In Canada we have no way to watch these events. Cheers!
10:15 randy: "not enough cut"
also randy when barnes shot the 4 7 10
Despite back problems, Wes Mallot's still on the tour dragging people.
I give Wes Mallot credit for bowling in pain. *I look down at the foul line when I bowl. Learned at 3 years of age.
Let's go Big Nasty!
I'm surprised neither Randy nor Norm knows that RST stands for Roto Star Tour.
Thank you very much for these shows. :D
rob stone is the epitome of not being good at his job but hes still there
33:38 Did you guys hear what Norm said ? 😂
2009 WSOB Cheetah Championship flashback...
I was thinking JUST that 😂
Thank you for uploading this !
Thanks so much for uploading!
"Don't make me go 'Cocaine-bear' on you. I'll do it."
-Rob Stone, 2023
one of the best ball in the planet GEM !
Not from fifth arrow apparently lol
I have watched norm Duke bowl so much but I think this is the first time I’ve heard him speak and I genuinely don’t know how
Great idea PBA!
So how long do you think Stone was biting his lip before blurting out the “Don’t make me go Cocaine Bear on you” line? Since the trailer? He was so excited to throw that out there!
I think everyone can agree when the tournament of champions is not at riveria it’s not the same.
Please pay Norm Duuuuuuuuuuuke to be a full-time PBA analyst.
Kris prather must not give up why he gave up like that
Packy just can't get it done when he's on tv...shows ya that experience is everything
My best friend and bowling teammate went to this event
I think Wes might get the tournament win
I’m a Packy fan. That was close.
LETS GO PACKY!
Im pretty sure Packy is using his Keven William's song in the background to support his friend
21:55 Packy's eyes can light someone's soul on fire lol.
Thanks for the quick upload. Goated
As someone who lives in the UK and doesn’t have access to fox , thankyou so much you’re a saviour
Idk why Lavoie changed from his Proton Physix, he threw shot after shot 10 back. Why did he change balls? Confusing to me 🤔
Thx for the upload 😀👏🏾
It’s a proton physix randy you friggin bum! Glad to have you back BPlanet! You’re the man
Lets go big nasty
At 7:45 Randy analyzed the “Infinite Physix” questioning on Francios, really? Of course that’s his ball. That’s a Storm Bowling ball & it’s a great ball. And it’s not an IQ.
If I had a nickel for every time Randy has to mention his 8-pin leave, I'd be fucking rich.
We get it bro, you had one of the worst breaks in bowling, let that shit go. It was 28 years ago man.
1:28:40 wes casually dropping the f bomb
Good job on Lavoie on eliminating that school dropout punk on the first match.
Thank you for fast upload!
Commentary this time is absolutely hilarious!
Statistically speaking, reactive bowling balls are higher scoring than urethane. No surprise that the urethane bowlers didn't advance. Most just use them because some one else does.
People use urethane because it's about control. You will hit the pocket more and leave less nasty splits on your misses.
Guys been listening to the best in the world to ever do it... chael p sonnen lmao
When did randy get a new grill?
The commentators sound like they should be commentating dodgeball on ESPN 8 the' ocho
Watching the 2021 replay as these 'sheep' wear face diapers, I can't help but laugh my ass off!
It's like trying to keep mosquitoes out with a chain link fence.
PBA broadcasts will get much better when they realize people are watching for the bowlers and not the antics of a couple old guys joking around all of the time. I like Randy and Norm, but to me they fall into the Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson category. Get some better, perhaps a bit more serious commentators in here for the bowling itself, and leave them for analyzing in-between matches, and before/after the event. Then focus the in-game energy on the match, the bowlers, their stats, stories, etc...all of these guys have sponsorships, social media followings, and cool shit going on. People want to see and hear that - look at Full Swing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dick Allen baby!! THB
I grew disinterested in the PBA in the 2000's. Got my fix by watching old 80's events on CHclip. But ever since guys like Packy, Darren Tang, and Belmonte have been tracking their weekly progress on their CHclip channels, my interest has come back up again. I think more bowlers need to put themselves out there and regenerate interest in them as "characters". And not like Pete Weber character....he's just a douche
This is the way to keep the PBA alive?
stu's response on the fashion was so true btw lol
Somebody knows the name of the song in min 15:00? 😶
WAter water water and i trimmed down from 220 to 175 , that a big difference , oh i am 61 so any body can do , especially those guys that i will be bowling them
53:53 robert smith :)
Time for packy to leave the purple hammer alone ..
Surly, Stupid, Nasty Name, Rob Stone? Hmmm.... *Hyjinx by C300 !* 😂
Does anyone know if the next shows will be on BowlTV? I don't think this one was.
Nope, next two shows on FS1 and the last one on FOX!
@Bowling Planet Ok, thanks.
Was rooting for Packy.
Well Miss America never looked so good
Hey everyone. It is "I have RUN that ladder before", not "I have RAN...".
Lmao … Wes Mellot 👖
Thanks for upload.
LETS GO PACKYYYY!
Freaking charger dude thanks he’s cool. To me makes him look like a tool bag..
These pros are too good how thay can handle all uf nerves and stress asow experience how thay find thar poking and strikers all night long i trying get parents gAm but I get so cufos how all boars can get 300 games??
